The Big 5

Creating a Life
by Creating a Life
I've always wanted to make a large number to add to our decor.
Inspired by a post at Funky Junk Interiors, I decided to try my hand at making a large number cut out of wood.
I didn't have any plywood on hand, so I thought I'd try a practice run with a piece of Masonite board I already had.
If you follow me at Creating a Life, you know my favorite thing is sharing how to make unique and personal items for your home, preferably without spending any money!
I sketched out the number on a piece of Masonite board I've had in my 'stash' for years. I cut the shape out using a jigsaw. This was my first attempt at cutting a shape with the jigsaw, so it's a little wonky :) But now I have a feel for what it will take to cut it from plywood when a piece comes my way!
I sanded the number lightly and painted it with black acrylic paint. When it was completely dry, I distressed it a bit by sanding the black away in a few areas and on the edges.
The number would be fine on its own, but I decided to attach it to a piece of faux brick panel that I also already had, just for a little more visual substance
I placed the panel on top of our piano and created a vignette around it using elements I love- vintage music and book pages, ironstone and typography.

I'm so glad I decided to give it a try! I love the way it looks, and now I'll be much more confident trying a larger one with plywood someday!
