How to Grow, Harvest, & Use Breadseed Poppies

Breadseed poppies are a beautiful and tasty addition to any home garden. They are not illegal, nor should they be confused with their opiate producing cousins. Breadseed poppies are large, showy flowers that turn into giant pods that dry out in the sun. As the pods dry the seeds rattle inside, letting the gardener know it’s time to harvest.
Harvest by cutting the pods from the plant and bringing them inside to harvest the seedy contents. Open the pods and pour out those tiny, tasty seeds. Dry the seeds a bit more before storing in airtight container until ready to use in a variety of culinary uses.

Kathie Lapcevic on Jul 22, 2014I direct seed right into the ground. I don't think they'd transplant well. Direct seed is the way to go here.
