Steps for painting stained furniture.....

I want to plan on painting my mom's bedroom set...it's stained a brown - and want to paint it an off white with some distressing....any suggestions...I have a sander, will I need a coat of a primer then 2 coats of paint?? And what paint would be best for painting furniture pieces?? Thanks!! : )

    Lisa just posted this project today: http://www.hometalk.com/?sort=new#!/422991 It has a link to more information on her site, but she claims her chalk paint requires no sanding or priming, and she got away with one coat.

    Jan, I LOVE annie Sloan Chalk Paint. There's no sanding required. You can order it online. You could paint the dresser white and then strip and retain the top dark. It's a beautiful look. Aso, I would distress with a sanding block. It's easier than regular sandpaper.
