Concrete & Masonry Design & Décor

Laying a limestone fireplace

We built much of our house ourselves, using reclaimed material to make the new house feel old. Although we had no experience in masonry, we felt confident we would be able to figure out how to do the fireplace. Turns out, laying rock is much like playing tetris! Order more rock than you think you will need, make sure you've got plenty of corner pieces, and lay out a rough plan before you actually start laying the stone. Always measure twice before you cut. Then, it is just a matter of trial and error.. and patience. It took us about two days from start to finish, but we couldn't be happier with the results!

You two make quite a construction team! The masonry alone is a marvel, and the beams the topping on the desert. The beams provided the perfect spot for the pot rack, didn't they?! Can you actually enjoy the chandelier at that height?

Oh very nice. Wonderful use of lighting really does bring the stone work to life. Yep, I like this a lot. I'm almost tempted to write a feature article on this post! :)

Amy & D. are really superman and superwoman, there isn't anything they can't do, or at least are willing to try at DIY.

I think it's just great! We have built two houses with our own hands and it's nice to see a younger couple doing the hard work needed to get more for your money! It IS possible! Looking forward to seeing more pictures!
