DIY Wooden Mantel Decor

Our home is fairly new, but I love the rustic look, and I wanted to make my fall mantel look as rustic as possible. We have a plain, painted wall above the mantel, so I created a wooden backdrop to give it some extra character without changing the look permanently.
We bought some wooden fence boards at Home Depot and had them cut at the store. I used the top part of the boards to make a wooden backdrop, and the bottom half is part of a future project! We glued the boards together with wood glue, and my husband sanded them down.
I wanted a worn, weathered look, so I watered down a mix of grey and brown acrylic paint, and gave the board several coats of this "stain." Then, I added two fall garlands that I made earlier.
That's all it took to make a rustic, faux-aged wooden backdrop. Here's how it looks on the mantel.
