DIY Industrial Inspired Coffee Table

Here is another table my sweet hubby made for me. This was also inspired by a coffee table in the Restoration Hardware catalog. The good thing about making your own furniture (besides saving serious money) is being able to get the custom size you need. This table is in our family room. I only have a 10 x 10 space to work with. Every coffee table I liked in the stores was way too big. Now, thanks to my hubby's handiwork we have a table we both love at the price he likes ($80 opposed to RH's $800 +) and the size I like (you can actually walk around it without banging up your shins or stubbing your toes). Here is the link to my site http://mingledelements.com/2012/01/industria... and here is the link to my husband's site http://shopngarage.com/2012/01/industrial-lo....

Do you have a link to show how he did it? I'd kill for a handy husband! That's great.

Taunnie's hubby is a welder so this is not something the average person can DIY. You could find a welder in your area to do that part though.

The post on my blog is just showing my hubby's handiwork. The post on my husband site does go into a little detail but his blog is more geared to shop guys who have this kind of equipment. We have had a lot of requests for a tutorial on this table. When we are done with our series on how anyone can create a factory cart coffee table with ordinary tools and materials we will have to work out a way anyone can make this table too.

Hello Taunnie - does your husband happen to have a bit of a more-detailed tutorial on this coffee table yet? I just LOVE it and think my husband could pull it off if there was a wee bit more instruction (like on how to make the corners rounded, and how to add the fabulous rivet detail). Thanks!!!

Meghan, I purchased a box of solid rivets from...

    www.mscdirect.com

the rivets are decorative. I drilled holes and installed the rivets. Next, I spot welded the back side of the rivet to hold it in place. ...»

The rounded corners were quite a bit of work. I built up the steel in the corners by layering in weld bead. I shaped the outside with an angle grinder. I shaped the inside with a carbide burr in an air die grinder.
