An idea has been brewing in my head for over two years and this dresser is the first attempt to make the idea a reality. It's inspired by astronomy maps, something that has always fascinated me. It's been painted two shades of gray and heavily sanded with 60 grit sandpaper. The lines were hand drawn and are imperfect in the execution.
Tip: I find that if I'm planning to paint an image or design on a dresser, the simpler the dresser, the better. More ornate dressers compete with the design. That's why either waterfall dressers from the art deco era or mid century pieces are my favorites. The finished piece.
A close up of the sketchy drawing. I used a Sharpie oil-based white pen and a ruler.
I never tire of how different the paint color looks after polyurethane or wax is applied. Here's a shot of the surface color before poly.
And here's the color after poly is applied.
In an attempt to create more starry texture on the surface, I spattered plaster of paris on the surface then sprayed it with a sealer. I tested its permanence by wiping it and as you can imagine, the powder wiped away. I’ll use paint next time rather than the plaster of paris.
Enjoyed the project?
