  • I think it might be a banana spider. It looks like some we have down here in Louisiana.
  • Kathy Kathy on Aug 05, 2012
We call them garden spiders and when you google "garden spider photos" they match.
  • TaniaC TaniaC on Aug 05, 2012
Ahhh Thank you so much Kathy I just googled and yes you are right..:) I wanted to make sure that it wasn't poisonous... It sure is a Pretty spider and my girls love to watch it through the glass window.;)♥

Garden Spider and they generally seem to be yellow & black or green & black, both pretty cool looking, BUT I wouldn't touch them, just cause spiders gross me out!
  • Susan S Susan S on Aug 05, 2012
Jim I am soooo w/you on that!! I don't mind seeing them from afar or w/a safe barrier between us BUT . . . .I DON'T "DO" SPIDERS"!!! @Tania - so did you name your friend "CHARLOTTE"?
  • Marg C Marg C on Aug 05, 2012
their webs are pretty amazing but that's the only use of the word 'pretty' that I'll use! ;)
  • Walter Reeves Walter Reeves on Aug 05, 2012
It's an argiope, commonly known as a garden spider....but sometimes called a writing spider, due to the zigzag lines of the central web.
  • TaniaC TaniaC on Aug 05, 2012
@ Jim I've never seen a black and green one yet I bet they are really pretty.:) and Susan LOL! Funny you should say that My girls did name it Charlotte go figure! I told them all we need now is a Pig called Wilbur and we will be set LMAO!...=') .. Spiders Don't scare me at all Most of them get rid of the nasty insects flying around It's the Brown Recluse I don't care for...They scare me..Have you seen what one of their Bites will do to your skin...Yikes! They are just like our White tails we have in Australia Check this out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WcgL6tlYYbs

I know spiders do have their place in being useful - just not close to me please!! Yeah, the brown recluse is definitely one to be respected. They can inflict some really serious HURT. Don't wanna tangle w/a black widow either. I don't know where my phobia comes from - I guess just those long legs. They give me the willies!! LOL
  • Becky H Becky H on Aug 05, 2012
I'm used to seeing the garden spiders w/the green and yellow markings. Very pretty, but I don't mess with them.
  • Vicki Vicki on Aug 05, 2012
yes pretty color garden spider but not in my yard, ewww, do not want any spiders to touch me. Also, bad news for hummingbirds if trap on huge strong spider webs. Someone sent me utube about spider killed the hummingbird on it's web like I was no way! Same with a praying mantis killed a hummingbird on the hummingbird feeder on utube. I was surprised that they do kill hummingbirds!
  • Sherrie S Sherrie S on Aug 05, 2012
Spiders also trap my mosquito eating dragon flies. I remove the webs as I go through my yard. I use a long branch as I am afraid of spiders (cute or not).
  • TaniaC TaniaC on Aug 05, 2012
Oh Vicki That Is just Horridly sad :'(....Most creatures don't bother me only the ones that I know will do harmful things to me or my kids so I try to stay away from them... I must say though I do have a serious phobia of Palmetto Bugs and giant cockroaches they just give me the willies!! as Susan would say LOL! They look like something out of a Syfy movie EEK!.. I could never do that show Fear Factor YIKES!! and Sherrie I love Dragonflies so good for you for protecting them..;)
  • Sharron W Sharron W on Aug 05, 2012
Awwwww But these spiders are very aggressive when disturbed AND if they bite you have a seriously scary venom....one of it's cousins in Austrailia and another in New Zealand and yet a third type found In TN and on the endangered list....well those three are so Venomous that they keep Anti Venom in the Hospitals for them...the Venom disrupts the Central Nervous System Like some kind of an electrical Charge...My mother has no feeling in one of her feet after five years, she got bit like three times on the leg...
  • Susan S Susan S on Aug 05, 2012
OK!!! I'M DONE! Don't wanna read anymore about Spiders. Let's change the subject!! LOL ;~) WILLIE WILLIE WILLIE

One of these had a web on the tree about 60 ft from our patio....one night I was walking up the path to the patio from our back shed...and my shoe came untied, I bent over to tie it, RIGHT AT THE EDGE OF THE PATIO, and as I bent over, I felt this WHOOSH by my head....and it turned out that the spider was hunting and if I hadn't bent over exactly when I did, he would have landed directly on the side of my face...after that....I started tearing down their webs...before that I was Live and let live...but that's when I read up on them and how damaging the vemon can be...
  • Jim Ginas Jim Ginas on Aug 05, 2012
so ironically, this week we had a "spider" discussion. I see spiders building webs at night, then they are gone during the day. An elderly lady I work with said the sun comes up and the webs disintergrate! We looked up about the webs going away and learned many spiders eat their webs to gain back the protein they need. I used to believe in the live and let live thought too and found that getting bit by spiders is NOT fun and they DO BITE for NO REASON at all! (Like when you are minding your business and sleeping!)
  • Susan S Susan S on Aug 05, 2012
SEE??? I'm perfectly entitled to feel the way I do!! Y'all are gonna make me have nightmares for sure!!
  • Sherrie S Sherrie S on Aug 05, 2012
Tania, in Florida we call those ugly bugs Palmetto but my friend who moved from Arizona saw one and wondered why we would name an ugly bug after a pretty Palomino horse. Then she said the ugly bug was as big as a horse. They are big here. I don't know if they bite, they scare me as much as a spider.
  • Jim Ginas Jim Ginas on Aug 05, 2012
I was bit by a spider on my left forearm and it blew up like a popeye arm! Hurt when it bit and when I screamed (like a girl!) and my wife saw the hole, she thought I was being a baby, until she say about half an inch to the side ANOTHER hole from the spider bite! It was HUGE and it hurt! Sorry Susan! so general rule is stay away from them!

  • Joe and Seloua C Joe and Seloua C on Aug 05, 2012
If I am not mistookenated (mistaken for you proper speaking folks) the spider looks like an orb weaver. They're very beautiful and are great catchers of bad bugs. Usually the female is very large and might have a few small males hanging around. Not like the black widow who would like them for dinner. The weaver is neat to watch in action. Just throw a small passing child on the web... umm, ok, maybe just a fly and see what happens.
  • Jim Ginas Jim Ginas on Aug 05, 2012
No - I didn't go to the Dr! of course not!
  • Susan S Susan S on Aug 05, 2012
Jim, you get yourself bitten by a brown recluse (yes, we do have them in Va) or a black widow and I'll bet you'll be begging to go to the Dr!! J & S - LOL - small passing child - riiiiiiight!!
  • Sharron W Sharron W on Aug 05, 2012
Well I make everyone in my family keep Mud Mask in the house just for this reason...Nephew got bit by a brown recluse on the back of the knee and his whole leg swelled up....and got red streaks....Dr gave him antibiotics and he had to go back 3 times and have it cut on...We put mud mask on and in 35 Minutes the red steaks began to subside and 24 hours later the Dr couldn't believe it was the same leg... My Hubby got bit the day I had surgury and they put him on medication and he still has a scar that looks like a huge burn on his leg... My son got bit and I packed it in mud mask every day for three days and on the third day all you could see was two tiny fang marks... Mud Mask, Good for bites and poison Ivy etc, every first aid kit should have some...
  • Sharron W Sharron W on Aug 05, 2012
St Andrews Cross is this spider... The web says they are non aggressive...I certainly don't agree...LOL
  • Z Z on Aug 05, 2012
What kind of mud mask Sharron? Just mud from the yard or a purchased mud mask like facial?
  • Susan S Susan S on Aug 05, 2012
So this isn't the innocuous garden spider in the pics?
  • Sharron W Sharron W on Aug 05, 2012
The Spider Identification chart says this is a St Andrews Cross Spider... @ Becky I have used both a St Ives Brand that was called French Mint and I purchased at Walgreens and a Brand called Queen Helene Mint Julep Masque, which I purchased at Sally's Beauty Supply...But In an emergency, most cat litter can be turned into a clay for "drawing" an insect sting or what have you....with a little water and a whisk...
  • Susan S Susan S on Aug 05, 2012
Sharron, thanks for doing the research & sharing the website info. I saved it in a file and hopefully won't ever have to access it. Guess I better get a mud pack to have on hand huh??? SEE WHAT YOU STARTED TANIA!!! (But hopefully we'll know what to do now just incase)
  • Z Z on Aug 05, 2012
Thanks Sharron. It wouldn't hurt to have that on hand since we live in the country and there are loads of spiders out here. A friends hubby in Washington state) was once bit by one and gosh he went through allot of pain and suffering. We have them in Nebraska too though. I think this type of spider has more names than any other spider I've ever read about. (Being a retired reading teachers assistant I've read many spider books with my students). In the research on this one they all talk about the body of the female being just over an inch long. If so then the ones I took pictures of were monster versions of them because the female (including her legs) spanned almost the size of my opened hand. It was basically the size of a tarantula, though the body wasn't quite as thick as they are. Even the bodies of the ones I've seen on a bush in our yard this year was well over an inch long. The wood you see in the picture of the photo I shared above is the side of a 2 by 4 for reference. Most, but not all the width of the wood is showing in the picture.
  • Sharron W Sharron W on Aug 06, 2012
@ Becky, WHOA that's pretty Big, but you know we had like 6 at various places in the yard and like I said, I let them live cause they were 'harmless" until that one actually attacked me that night and it was a huge one too...way bigger than an inch...and I actually felt a breeze and heard it hit the flower pot next to me when it missed...after that they were fair game and when i saw them i killed them...maybe that's why I never had hummingbirds until about that time...LOL
  • Marg C Marg C on Aug 06, 2012
eww eww eww! way too big for my liking Becky!!! I seriously think I would pass out from fright or either go into shock. no kidding :S
  • Becky H Becky H on Aug 06, 2012
What (I feel) is not right, is they describe the spider size by "body" size.............Sorry, when I see a spider, I see its over all size.................legs count too, and some of them are giants. Going simply by body size doesn't help me one bit.
  • TaniaC TaniaC on Aug 06, 2012
WOW!!...I leave for one day and look what I started LOL!... Sorry:(..... Do you have the Willies still Susan.???.... Thanks everyone for all your info and Laughs♥ I went and Googled "are Garden spiders aggressive or not" just for kicks and giggles cause I'm still not convinced that this Pretty spider is aggressive and this is what I found http://www.badspiderbites.com/garden-spider/ I also found another site: read the relationship to humans:) http://www.fcps.edu/islandcreekes/ecology/black_and_yellow_argiope.htm Oh and @ Sherrie S ...I used to live in Florida for 14 years until We moved to Illinois and We had Palm Trees in our back yard... I didn't know this until we were trimming the palm fronds off that Palmetto bugs Like to live in them... You know I'll never cut another Palm frond again EVER!...Now that gave me the WILLIES.... EEEEYIKES!! @ Jim Hope you healed up OK I have a few friends who have been bit by a Brown Recluse and they say it hurts They Scare me and I always tell my husband to wear gloves before he picks stuff up in our Garage cause they like to hide behind stuff and he also hates to go to the DR's @ Sharron W.. I will Have to try that mud mask Thanks For the info..:)
  • Marg C Marg C on Aug 06, 2012
good to know I am armed with Queen Helene Mint Julep Masque! I've used this stuff for many years and love it. But this is great advice on using the mud masks...who knew?
  • Z Z on Aug 06, 2012
@ Sharron, there's no way I'd every kill a garden spider. I find it hard to kill even a fly, but just imagine the squish you'd get from that big one I saw? No thank you! So sorry if you read that Susan. :^\ @ Marg. I have no idea why it didn't bother me, though I have to admit I was a bit leery about retrieving my mail that day. Thanks for the links Tania. The second one had the females body at growing to one and half inches long. The head of the one I took pictures of was that long! I'm thinking I need to call our zoo and see if there's anyone spider specialist I can talk to. I know I'm not exaggerating, but with all these articles stating a much smaller size I need to hear from someone what may have caused the one I had to get so big. Even the smaller of the two had a body of at least two inches long.
  • Becky H Becky H on Aug 06, 2012
Tania, that is the very reason no palm trees are in my yard! Palms provide nesting areas for roaches, squirrels and rats! Squirrels are okay, but the rest is NOT!! We had 3 queen palms (20' tall) in our yard when we bought our home; freezes ultimately took their toll on them, and I gladly had them removed.
  • Sherrie S Sherrie S on Aug 06, 2012
Becky H, I guess I'm lucky because my queen palm died of something. However, I love palms. Do you think Pindo palms are a problem, too? I have 2 of them.
  • TaniaC TaniaC on Aug 06, 2012
@ Becky H Don't get me wrong I love Palm trees and I loved Florida ,wish I could Live there again cause I so hate the cold BRRRR! I liked it when I was younger but as I get older my bones and joints don't like it as much LOL!... We also had a palm tree in our front yard but it got hit by lightning and was toast..:( But as for cutting the palm fronds I will leave that up to my Hubby cause I had nest of those nasty little buggers come at me and you shoulda seen me scream like a little girl.. I think the whole neighborhood heard me LOL!
  • Susan S Susan S on Aug 06, 2012
Oh I think you were pretty well entitled to scream any ole way you wanted Tania. A whole nest of 'em coming atcha - NOPE!! Don't think so!!! You know, the more I learn about all the bugs 'n critters everywhere else, I think I'm perfectly happy right where I am!!

Sherrie, the vermin love how the fronds grow out of the trunk and the "hairy" tissue at the base of the fronds. I can't say what their preference is in palm species, or if one draws more than another. I sort of think one like a cabbage palm with more frond stumps would invite more vermin. Whenever I see palms close to a restaurant, I cringe.

I was in boot camp in 62, and one night I was walking to the canteen, (san antonio texas) had my flash light as required, was by myself, and I see a spider in my way on the sidewalk, so of course i stepped on it....and bijillions of baby spiders came running out of it, all over my foot! Talk about screaming and jumping and hollering! On this note, I now have. to. go. to. bed! :o

First of all, somehow I just can't even imagine Bernice in "boot camp"??? Really - Dawlinq you simply do not strike me as the military type! Tania - I know . . . .that mental image is hilarious. I see her in military fatigues, flashlight in hand (ALLLL ALONE - in the DARK) smashes spider then goes totally beserk w/her boots spinning out trying to get the baby spiders off!! Can you just hear her commanding officer now??? I'll bet she provided lots of practical jokes for the rest of her military career!!

OH Poor Bernice.... Now that Susan has put that image in my head I'll always remember Bernice H every time she posts as that Military gal with Flashlight in hand in Rambo attire and ready to squish to the death any spider who invades her path to the canteen....LOL!

Ok you guys.....here's more...after boot camp I went to Oklahoma for Flight Hostess training, I woke up one morning with a lip as big as a golf ball.. Do you think their relatives hunted me down and bit me? Yes, i can laugh now, but at the time....I was really freaked out! I dont really know what happened, was she ready to "give birth"? Or do some carry their young in a pouch? I never really thought about it, just that i was really squirming and screaming! And if you are still picturing me in fatigues, we had light blue blouses and dark blue pants, and yes, combat boots! I was afraid they could crawl up my pants...not like a skirt. .....what would I do? Dont picture that! So i am getting a laugh out of your laugh!
  • Bernice H Bernice H on Aug 23, 2012
And Sharron your experience reminds me of the movie Arachniphobia....the first 2 or 3 minutes were enough to scare the P...w...and s... out of me, a big spider about the size of a hand dropped down on one of the guys heads in the forest , and we 2 girls screamed and drove that car out of the drive in movie so fast....we spun dirt! I cant imagine how freaky it would have been if it had landed on you, a swoosh is enough. Can we get back to little rabbits and tame deer now?

@ Bernice: I had one of my pilots bitten on the lip by a spider too. His lip swelled up HUGE. My left forearm bitten and swelled up and what I assume a couple weeks ago, my finger bitten and my legs. Could be from the woods (Walking and working in them pulling weeds on the back end of my fense (Aluminum). THATS why I don;t like spiders! THEY WILL BITE YOU in your SLEEP, MINDING YOUR BUSINESS!

Wow Jim...I've been bitten once or twice or maybe just a few more times than that LOL! You are absolutely right they will Bite you in your Sleep while minding your own business... I guess growing up in Australia you really don't think too much about the dangers especially when your just a kid... Growing up we didn't have all the luxuries of camper trailers and all so we did most of our camping in tents and you just never knew what little critter came and visited you at night in the Bush...I'm sure I had my fair share... I am a little more cautious now that I am older and know that there are some pretty poisonous critters that will do quite a hurting on you especially the Brown Recluse which I always wear gloves now when rifling through all the wood in my garage those little boogers just sneak right up on ya if you are not paying attention, and they have a nasty bite to them.... I don't make it a point to play with my little spider friends we don't have that kind of bond I just like to look at the pretty ones especially if it's through glass like Susan said LOL! and Susan Too Freakin' Funny Pucker Up you are just Hilarious...♥

Tania, I tried your "few interesting reads" and found the following: "It's not the spiders you should be afraid of, but bug parts in processed food. The USA allows a large, large concentration of bugs parts in our processed foods." Now that didn't make me feel any better.
  • Susan S Susan S on Aug 25, 2012
Thanks for the enlightening info Tania - yes, it is an interesting read. Sherrie - as to the bug parts in processed food I can attest to that fact first hand. Years ago I accidentally opened a can of name brand tuna from the bottom end. Lifted the lid and wo-lah - a perfectly preserved fly laying right there imbedded in the tina. YUMMO!! Extra protein????
  • Sharron W Sharron W on Aug 25, 2012
@Tania,Marg, Susan, Becky, Ya'll....LOL I know they come out at night looking for SOMETHING, and I can tell you I was bitten three times in a row across my face at the cheek up towards the temple. Luckily, I found the spider dead on the pillow in the morning and knew that's what it was....I started packing mud mask on it, and had to do so for three days.... When the venom came out it looked like Black Jello....no kidding Black as coal tar. I don't have any scars, I'm guessing because I caught it so early. But let me tell you I certainly am more vigilent about what hangs above my bed, and about having my bedclothes, dust-ruffle etc, touching the floor....Oh and I sleep with the sheet over my head...LOL One quick sign of a "spider" bite is if it itches and when you scratch you get a "burning" sensation instead of relief from the itch.
  • Susan S Susan S on Aug 25, 2012
Weeeeeeeeelllll - thanx Sharron. You are just so reassuring!! Next time spare me the graphic description - ICK!!! lol
  • Sharron W Sharron W on Aug 25, 2012
Sorry Susan.....I thought the vemon was interesting, and know I know why it leaves those streaks of red across the skin when you're bitten....My nephew almost lost his leg to one....Bitten behind the knee, three trips to the ER/Dr's office for shots and Meds....and Blood poisoning set in....we packed his knee in Mud Mask and within 30 minutes the red streaks down his leg were pulling back and the next day when he went to the DR the DR was stunned, asked him to bring in what we'd been using and said he was going to tell all his patients of bites to start using it... Oh, and if you don't vacuum the bottom of your recliners and couches....You should...LOL
  • Susan S Susan S on Aug 25, 2012
Was it a brown recluse that bit either of you? I have to say that I truly believe some of the old tried & true methods can be way more effective that always pumping tons of antibiotics & cortisone into ourselves. Kinda depends on what the bite is but at the very least add the mud pack to help draw out the poison.
  • Sharron W Sharron W on Aug 25, 2012
It was a brown recluse that bit both of us, I don't know how big the one that bit him was but the one that bit me in a string across my face was one of the largest ones I've ever seen...Body was as big as three pencil erasers in a row...Because I apparently killed it I had it so I knew what it was and started the mud mask as soon as I woke up....When the mask started drawing it burned and stung like crazy! But since I was working at the time I could only leave it on a short time and then had to go to work and put it back on that evening...
  • Becky H Becky H on Aug 25, 2012
Sharron, if you were bitten by a brown recluse 3 times on the face, you are a very lucky woman not to have become violently ill! Indeed you are a very smart woman to have used the mud pack to draw the venom!!

@Tania, oh aren't you rhyming simon....LOL that's pretty good I have to say.... @Sherrie as to the "untested" part that's where you'd be wrong, I studied healing herbs since I was 11 and lived in the mojave with access to the Najavo medicine man...it spurred an interest that I've used my whole life...I have one book that dates back to the 1700's regarding the use of herbal remedies...and although technology has allowed some testing of the chemical componants, not that much has been done and it remains a matter of passing knowledge down to keep it alive...While I certainly am glad they discovered antibiotics for "after the fact" I do firmly believe that most of what ails us has a cure right here...and We have lost the knowlege by killing each other off instead of learning from one another...OK That's my soap box for today....back to the spiders...HaHaHa.... and I don't have a scar....
