Aging In Place - Making Headlines

AK has been a Certified Aging In Place Specialist for many, many years! In the past two months, remodeling for aging in place has seen a dramatic increase as people feel enabled to make the commitment to their future comfort and safety in their existing home!
The AJC reported this weekend on the up-swing of homes being fitted to meet the demands of aging: http://bit.ly/MYQ6vg Do you have any accessible or universal design adaptions in your home? These modifications can be as simple as a faucet that does not require grasping (to assist with messy or arthritic hands) or as complex as an addition to a home, or baths designed to be completely accessible and usable for people of all abilities!

  • Happy to help talk about a very important and interesting topic! Dee, I'm sure you could write a great post about "out of the box" things you've done to your home. We think Universal Design has a lot to do with assisting and promoting independence, and we think that is such a positive thing at every age and every ability!

I have completed two of the six weeks of no bending, lifting, twisting, leaning and a whole list of don't following back surgery. I now have a true appreciation of the high toilets so if changes are made for aging, this would be number one on my list. The shower sitting shelf would certainly made taking showers so much easier, my first was a giggling disaster, but finally accomplished. Thank you for the list of tips.
