A Classic Desk and a Glam Makeover

I took a classic desk and gave it a makeover. The lines of the piece are beautiful and the drawers open and close perfectly. The desk is marked B. Altman & Co. NY which, in its time, was a very high end store. The piece is obviously a quality piece with solid wood construction and dovetailed drawers. However, it had been poorly taken care of and needed a lot of TLC.
Here is the "before" shot of the desk.
Here you can see the poor condition the top was in.
Here is the after! I used General Finishes milk paint in Lamp Black for the body.
Here is the refinished top. I sanded it back and used Minwax in Special Walnut as the stain.
The top has two partitions on either side that pull out. They have black leather inserts with a gold embossed border. The gold ties in nicely with the newly polished brass pulls and the gold detailing that now shows up against the dark paint.
A new life for an old desk!
