American Beautyberry- a Southern Native Beauty

I love purple and when I can find it in the garden I have to have it. This southern native for zones 6-10 is a part sun to full sun plant who enjoys moist soil. However, she will adapt to any soil and will grow to heights and widths of 8' (if it loves the area it is in).
I have this plant in one of my backyard beds and soon will be adding it to another backyard bed with the Itea virginica (Virginia sweetspire). The beautybush is a bird magnet and the purple berries are food for the birds.
There are 2 other varieties that are commonly found in many local garden centers for those of you in zone 5. They are callicarpa japonica and callicarpa amethyst. These 2 varieties are very similar to the native American beautybush with those bright purple berries. Visit www.thegardenfrog.me to read more
