Roses

I used banana peel to fertilize. I heard this from my son-in-law who is a Master Gardener, then read it on Hometalk. As my roses had been looking sad the past couple of years I was ready to try anything. See 1 mo. results.

Not one person told us how to use this banana peel....what are we supposed to do with it? bury it, or just lie the ugly thing on the ground????!!!!! that would look unsightly!

Chop the banana peel and bury it next to the root of the plants.

Alfalfa works for my roses. I can buy the powdered alfalfa, lots easier to work with. I also use a systemic fertilizer in the spring before bloom and then mid summer for fall bloom. Helps with afid and black spot..

Also thanks for the banana peel reminder, and coffee grounds. I use to get buckets of grounds free at the local Starbucks.

My brother in law used to put a fresh fish in the bottom of the hole before he planted his rose bushes. They were always beautiful.

As far as rabbit pellets go, rabbit manure is the 2nd best fertilizer in the world, 2nd only to bat guana. But do not put any fresh manure on or around your plants as it should be aged a bit first. Mix it with soil and then mix it into the soil around the plant. Fresh manure can "burn" your plants.

Donna Jean O -- What I read -- on the internet -- you take 2 or 3 banana peels cut them into smaller sized chunks over you blender/food processor and blend/process them until they are quite small pieces then put them into a sealed container (I use a quart mason jar and fill it the rest of the way up with water) for a week. Then pour the banana mash around the roots of you rose bush(s). A quart can do 2-3 bushs depending upon the size of your plant. It works quite well. All the bushes ...»
had mutiple blooms. Plus another idea is to spread your coffe grounds around you Azaleas. If you break up your egg shells into fine particles they work well around you roses also.

I have used cold coffee as well! Gives them an instant boost My daughter-in-law gave me her Peace Lily. It was dying. I started pouring my cold coffee in the dirt around it, cut off the dead growth and it perked up started new growth and is now beautiful She can't believe it! I have it out on my patio. It has quadrupled in size! But yes, roses love cold coffee and coffee grounds, cut up banana peels, and egg shells, remember all of this can go into your compost pile as well. Don't ...»
put fish in your compost pile (no meat). But yes, bury fish then put your soil and plants on top! Great idea!

If you have problems with rabbits & deer eating your flowers esp tulips (must taste the best) take your "used" cat liter and spread around the garden ....marks the territory and keeps animals away.

I just dig a hole about 6-8 inches out from the plant stem and bury the banana peel, it doesn't have to be deep just enough to keep it from attracting Knats and fruit flies, I use my coffee grounds too and just put them on the ground around the plant and because I can't get to all my plants with the coffee grounds, I add instant coffee to my Miracle grow sprayer when I give them Miracle grow....it works wonders. Thanks for the Beautiful roses photos and starting this thread Sherry L. !

Over ripe bananas blended, skin and all then pour onto the roses. My grandmother use to buy the old banana from the fruit market, take them home and chop them up around the base of the rose bushes. (this was before blenders:) She always had beautiful roses. Coffee grounds are great for sago palms as well.

My son loves bananas but when the peel has any brown on it. He thinks the banana is not any good so now I know I can share his bananas with my roses. Thanks

@Anniebates, you can also peel the banana and put it in the freezer in a ziplock bag...LOL then give the peel to your roses. Frozen Bananas Make a "smoothie" more of a Milkshake without adding ice cream....The added benifit is the banana doesn't have a chance to get brown...and they make good "pops" for small kids right out of the freezer.

Lisa McDaniel : If you will post your question as a new question using the red "ask" button at the top of the page, more people will see it and you will get better answers. (And, it would help if you could post a photo of what's going on with your roses.)
