Thanks, Sharron! I used a 10" rubber kids ball since they tend to hold their shape better and don't deflate overnight while drying like a balloon can :)
Very neat new fixtures. I've wanted to make some, but have not where to use them. I figured you'd mark a circle on the ball and avoid covering that area with string, but your way works just as well since it's somewhat hidden at the top fot he fixture. They look nice over your island.
Becky - Thanks! I made a larger one (I think it was 36") and hung it up as a light fixture over my dining room table in my old condo! It cast some pretty cool shadows on the ceiling when it was lit up and I'm still kicking myself for leaving it behind haha
Sharron - To get the ball out, I popped it with a wall anchor that had a sharp point on the end (scissors, knife, or a nail would work too) and then cut a small circle out of the top that was big enough for me to squeeze my hand in so I could start cutting pieces off the ball off to finally remove it all!
Oh I bet the large one was awesome too! I know our daughter would like one, but she lives in Hawaii and unless I make it when we visit I don't think it would ship well.
Tip for making a larger one: I used a rubber exercise ball that I bought for something like $5 at Walmart years ago. It was a little harder to remove than the 10" rubber balls were but I got it out!
I think if you packed the shipping box with plenty of peanuts, it should arrive ok! Maybe fill the string shell with some too so it retains its shape and doesn't get crushed?
I suppose I could leave the ball inside it to ship it. I doubt she'd do anything with it until I got there anyway. She only does crafts when we're together. She's a more adventurous type than anything. You know, the sky diving, rapid river riding type. She takes after her Daddy, though even he wouldn't jump out of a perfectly good airplane.
Leaving the ball in is a great idea! Haha, would you jump out of a plane? It sounds like fun but I don't know if I'd have the courage to follow through with the idea!
Heck I don't even like the idea of flying in an airplane let alone jump out of one! I do fly as long as don't think to much before I go. I pray during take off and landing too.
@Becky, Me too....I've been flying since I was small, (5) and flew unsupervised to the grandparents...it was really a service back then...the stewardesses took great care of me....but even then if the plane turned I started crying cause it was "tipping over"...apparently I was fine with the idea of forward motion...but any tilting and suddenly I knew we were dropping out of the sky...LOL A Business life had me flying a lot and frankly it never worried me a bit, until a trip in 1984, when

they taxied us and took off four times, circled and relanded...kept us on the plane for two hours...and suddenly the doors opened and Man in Black, with Military escort and suitcase handcuffed to his arm got on the plane....I am not exaggerating when I say I sat on the edge of my seat the entire trip...I was so nervous....after that if I could conceivably drive, I did....
In 1984 I was 28.... and If I'd been smart and realized it was probably one of "our" guys I'd have been ok...but for whatever reason I decided that it was a criminal being transported and it seriously scared me...Now of course I know better...

wow Sharron, that's quite a story! how old were you then?
When I flew TWA to Chicago from LA I was 5.
I was twenty eight in ''84 too.
