Making Our Small Master Bedroom Work!

My husband thought I was nuts, but I thought moving the bed over to the window wall would give us so much more room to walk around! Who was right???

As the wife, aren't you always right?

Just kidding, but I like your bed and the green color on the walls.

It certainly solved the space issue. My Dear Hubs would also take issue for blocking the window and part of me would agree, mostly due to the fact we do not have a/c and air flow is so important.

OMG! No A/C????!! You are a trooper! My thought was with the headboard blocking the window, you almost don't need window treatments. Are your windows double hung?

Awesome switch - Awning outside the windows would keep the sun out and allow you to open the windows from the top now matter what. If you have a ceiling light you can replace it with a ceiling fan, to keep the air moving at night.

@ Becky, yeah...no a/c and have never missed it. If the house gets too warm we turn the blower of the furnace on and it sends the cool air up from the basement, very similar to a/c without the chemicals. Living in NE Ohio, the temps always fall at night so opening windows then and closing them in the morning keeps the house at a comfortable temp.

That is a great idea Dee! I was just saying to my hubby the other day...if we could just get this cool air blown up from the basement! Make sure you check for radon levels though. We had to have a mitigation system put in our home because our radon levels were high. It comes from the ground below.

@Red-the furnace guy checks for radon when he does our cleaning I think. I'll have to double-check that. He was also the one who showed us how to use our furnace(the blower anyway) in the summer. There is a switch we flip and it will only shut off when we flip the switch back; it is not connected to the thermostat in any way. We also have a heating oil furnace so I don't know if they all have the ability to be used this way.

Red and Dee, you have Radon??! I thought that was specific to Fla., a residue of phosphate mining. Son of a gun! I didn't realize anyone else had to deal with those issues.

@Becky-Radon is found anywhere there is soil, in varying degrees; it is not all bad or unhealthy. I think most furnace companies check for it as well as CO2---maybe someone else here would know.

Radon testing takes days to perform...the unit I bought measures the levels and gives me an average. it does not have anything to do with furnace. They sell test kits on line. I bought one after our "Granite Nightmare" because I was so paranoid about lung cancer. Turns out our levels were sky high. Now when tested, there is none. It is removed at a constant level daily with the mitigation system. Fortunately we have only lived here a short time. Radon is a major cause of lung ...»
cancer. Right up there w smoking. Get it checked to be safe! Radon comes from the ground and is everywhere.
