Design & Décor Windows & Doors

Dressing up a difficult wall.

When we remodeled our kitchen/famiy room, we had a small hallway wall that contained a thermostat, triple light switch, phone connection and doorbell. We knew we would never be able to hang a picture there, so while I was doing the venetian plaster treatment, I decided to dress it up by taping off the area, cutting out a design and adding another layer of the plaster to make a design. The same thing can be done with drywall mud and then painted. I got the same color paint as the plaster and painted the thermostat and doorbell cover to make them blend in.

Leslie - wow, what a brain storm you had there!! It looks awesome and it's such a novel solution to distract from things that we can't do anything about!! Love it!!!

Oh wow Leslie, that looks awesome. I've always wanted to do a raised plaster stencil. Now I want to do it all the more!

Thank you! The only recommendation I would have is that if you do this, use the painters tape and cut out your design. Typical stencils are made for paint, but will not hold up to being scraped over with a trowel. This wall seems to get more comments than anything else we've done in our house. I ended up doing the back of our island with the same treatment, although I tinted the plaster in varying shades a bit on it. I just hope any future owner likes it....this will not be an easily removed feature....LOL

Wow that is awesome Leslie! I planned on using craft foam to make my stencils. Their use to be products for doing this that the stencils were thicker than standard stencils made for paint so I figured crafting foam would work. When you remove the stencil and the plaster is dry you can lightly sand it rounding the edges.

Very cool. Love it. I'm going to look around and find a place to try this in my house.
