I worked with Portis Building and Interiors, Inc. on this Kitchen Renovation. We opened up to the Family Room and expanded the opening to the Dining Room. This created a light filled inviting respit for entertaining or just relaxing with the family.
*Options I considered for this project:
We looked at several options for opening up the space while maximizing the efficiency.
*Questions and unexpected events that arose during the project:
The client was not unhappy with their existing space yet wanted a change. As we worked thru the plans we kept ending up where we started. It wasn't until we chalked off the layout of the floor so they could virtually live in it for a weekend that they were able to commit to a change.
*My motivation to do this project:
We started to renovate this space, but the schedule was exelerated when the dishwasher broke.
*Project Steps:
After many alternates we found a layout they loved and began elevating the walls to determine the level of detailing and finish.
Advice:
A designer can help you avoid the pitfalls and hidden costs involved with a renovation project. A picture is always worth a thousand words. Do your research and give as many visuals as you can to describe what is important to you.
Before. The dated finishes and spec grade cabinets left much to be desired.
After. The warmth of the wood floors, cabinets and granite counters gives a marked improvement to the existing stark white cabinets and cold tile floors.
The Porch addition allows this family to enjoy the views of the creek originally only enjoyed from the small Kitchen window.
The fireplace addition was questionable since there is an existing fireplace in the Family Room, but the plan allowed the fire to be visable from the Entry Foyer to create a wonderful focal point when entertaining.
The increased Dining Room opening captures views of the wonderful Dining Room chandelier and furniture the family inherited.
