Tearing out the old concrete, pouring new. We are also having a wooden fence put in to enclose the backyard and keep the kids corralled & putting a gate where the rear carport meets the driveway for the kids to ride bikes/scooters safely

Itsreally C on May 30, 2011settling ? what settling ? if the base was correct, there won't be any concrete settling. expansion joint material should be placed between the slab & any structure/footing. contraction joints can either be formed, grooved, OR diamond sawed,,, aci recommends thickness/3 ( 4' = 1.333" deep ),,, locally, random micro-cracking can occur in as little as 5hrs after which you live w/the cracked conc OR have some repairs to make,,, its always easier to do the work right instead of returning to repair the errors. slab size is usually determined by thickness,,, keep slabs as square as possible not exceeding, typically, 8 - again, per aci specs,,, this means you should have a longitudinal sawcut also as gary amazing posts.
