Painting the Claw Foot Tub

Painting a bathtub is easier than you think. I had painted the inside of my old claw foot tub a couple years ago using tub and sink paint. That stuff is smelly! It's held up great, though. Recently, I painted the outside with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Old White. I also painted a fleur de lis and stripe to give it a bit more character. U used Annie Sloan's Paris Grey paint. You can see the full project on my blog.

My old toilet is still fully functional. Our house was built around 1875,

This is the "before." It wore a marble faux finish. It was really too dark for the room.

Hey Jennifer - your bathroom looks gorgeous!! The fleur de Lis is absolutely perfect on your tub and don't ever change the olde fashioned toilet either. It's part of the ambiance of this 1800's home!!

Looks great. I have an old tub and when we remodeled the bathroom we decided to keep the tub. It looks a little bad on the inside, its worn in spots, but nobody makes them solid like these old ones. I might think about painting it. I never thought much about it till now.

@Brenda F - have you ever thought about having your tub resurfaced? Might be worth checking into!

Beautiful!!! I have used the tub & sink paint on 2 bathroom sinks & 2 fiberglass tubs with surrounds. They all look great & have held up well. The paint does really sink when wet, but well worth it. Cost was about $80.00 for 2 kits, great results for a fraction of the cost of resurfacing!!!

Maybe sometime in the future. I took a closer look at it last night and its still in good shape the water is making it change color but other than that its still good and the outside is perfect.

How did you paint the side of the tub facing the wall? I have an old claw foot in my bathroom and it has been painted a peach color on the outside. It needs to be repainted. Moving it is not an option. It's in pretty tight quarters.

Annette, don't tell anyone, but I didn't paint the side facing the wall. I could've pulled the tub out a bit while still keeping it connected to the plumbing in order to paint, but since no one would ever see that side of the tub I left it alone. :)

I love this claw foot tub. I had one in the 80's that I paid $35 for at a salvage store. Painted the bottom pink. I hung the most beautiful pale yellow oriental wall paper on the upper. "My shelf" was an old antique mantel from the basement of my antique house. A friend brought and installed two antique doors with full mirrors from an old theater as the bath was the only bath in the house and situated between the two bedrooms. There was even a working window with the lower being ...»
stained glass in the heavenly greens, pinks, and yellows of the other combinations. My sink was a large Pedestal that my son found for me. He also kocked out my floor and poured a concrete floor that he covered in pale pink tiles. I bartered my beautiful copper plumbing in exchange for the old blue fixtures. Can't remember where I found the antique toilet. Your tub brings back the memories of that wonderful house - opps! no! it was not a house, it was a home. Your white is always right and the fleur de lis is so perfect. You have the right to feel as proud as I felt for mine. All I had to pay for was the expensive wall paper. I might have paid to have the paper hung with crown molding at the top. My shower was just a little rubber hosed hand held shower that lay in the bottom of the tub. Thanks for allowing me to reminisce over my most perfect design of my life and to think how it just evolved.
