Fellow Pool Owners: BEWARE OF THE WEIR!
by

(IC: homeowner)
Now that I've had 24 hours and a "cabernet calm down" I can tell this story. You know the skimmer on your pool that takes debris from the surface and holds it in a basket? The skimmer has a plastic flap or door on the water's surface called a weir. Like many skimmer units, my weir was molded to the skimmer forming it's own hinge. Over the years the hinge weakened and the weir fell off. I replaced it with a recommended door that has spring loaded rubber mounts on both sides. It has worked relatively well for the past two years but yesterday disaster struck! Over time the door, or weir moved out of position just enough to become stuck. My skimmer was closed, no water was allowed to flow into the pump and the pump burned up. Beware of replacement weirs. If you have to replace one and can find a unit with a permanent, stationary hinge, buy it.
