I would like to renew my living room furniture that is made of rattin
It is natural rattin with a varnish. I would like to give it a kind of white wash finish that would let me see the pale color of the rattin but the cracks would be white. I thought of using milk paint or chalk paint that I would rub on the smooth surfaces to let the rattan underneath show through. Do you have a better idea? Would I need to sand the surface before?

use a white glaze instead of paint. you can use a wash of vinegar and water to take tje sheen away and allow paint ro stick.

I love rattan. Personally, rather than paint, I might use Minwax Polyshades for a little different tone. I did a couple of chairs in a darker tone and they look great.

You could even combine the stain and glaze. And white wash it, wipe it in wipe it off after a few minutes. It is slow build up but glaze you have more time to work with and by doing it a layer at a time gives you more control.
