Looking for ideas in how to redo kitchen cabinets that don't go all the way to the ceiling without completely replacing

Z on Oct 15, 2012They already have a start with the crown Sara. You could also add a bull nose trim under the upper cabinets and brackets with mini shelves between them. Legs are another way to give a more custom look. If you can find the right size curtain rod finials are usually less expensive. As for the white, you can always us a glaze to add depth and warmth to their current starkness.Helpful Reply

Leslie D on Oct 15, 2012How big is the gap? You could use a stacked crown moulding to give them a very custom look. I agree with Becky. A nice glazing of the cabinets would give depth and make them look more high end. Here is a diagram of how the stacked moulding works.Helpful Reply

Leslie D on Oct 15, 2012This is an application on cabinets. You can fill in an 8" - 9" area fairly easily. Anything larger than that will make your cabinets seem top heavy.Helpful Reply

Sara Huizenga on Oct 16, 2012Thanks so much for the awesome tips - LOVE THEM - we're looking at purchasing this home but going from the rich details of our current 100 year old home to one more on the builder grade line is a bit overwhelming ... ;-)Helpful Reply

Z on Oct 16, 2012Oh I can see where that would be worrisome. There are many styles of trim that can add more character to builder grade cabinets. And since the cabinets are painted it's much easier to add on. Be sure to keep us informed. We'd love to follow along your adventure. We're in the process of finishing our somewhat new home (we've built it ourselves and moved in just over nine years now) and working on adding Victorian trim throughout. It's been fun, but it's time consuming. We're staining it all.Helpful Reply

Leslie D on Oct 16, 2012I know the feeling, Sara. We bought a builder grade home in a great neighborhood and immediately gutted the entire downstairs to make it a custom home. Becky, you guys sound just like us....never enough projects going on and so many ideas. The only thing we are short of is time and money! This is what we did to our kitchen.Helpful Reply

Sara Huizenga on Oct 16, 2012I'm still stuck on those glossy pre-fab white cabinets though - lol - (crazy part is I actually used to sell these kind of homes - but never until now considered living in one ;) .... Is there any kind of gloss/stain/etc that you know of that can be put over them without having to sand them all down to - whatever is under there?Helpful Reply

Designs by BSB on Oct 21, 2012Tips -- add light rail to the bottom of the wall cabinets, add an additional trim at the top of the cabinets (you dont have to remove what you have - add on!). Add larger, taller corbels on the back of the island (either wood or iron) along with a flush baseboard around the sides and back. Change hardware to a larger, more modern handle -- but you would likely need to keep the knobs on the drawers. Something like this (128mm centers would be best for a change:) http://www.hickoryhardware.com/products/products.aspx?PNo=1233 A tile splash will change everything..Helpful Reply
