I saw the cutest idea years ago for curtain valances using men's belts. Been so long ago that I can't remember all the specific details of the complete creating/assembling, but the basic idea was looping fabric around a wrapping paper tube (which was at the bottom to help weight the whole valance down) and using a matching buckled belt looped on each side extending the complete length of the valance and with about an inch or so of the fabric showing on the outside edge of the belt. (pretty much with the same effect of the belts on these shelves). Again.....I know the description here for this is pretty vague. Sorry.
(Just thought this would go perfect for anyone wanting to use Angela, Blue i Style's theme.)

I’d have loved to see that!

Actually, after reading back over my comment, I realized it was probably a little confusing because I left out a very important part:
You also wrap and glue the top end of the fabric around another wrapping paper tube and run the curtain rod through that. Maybe think of the old paper "scroll", if that helps.

Wooow, I love this, definitely going to try. I am learning so much from this site, we always get rid of belts what a wonderful idea to re-use them!!!

I love this projet. I will try it too. Do you think we can use hotglue instead of nails to keep the shelfs in place?
