Woodbridge Environmental Tiptophouse.com on Nov 02, 2012Your local home centers sell all the materials you need to construct a shelf in your home. There are adjustable wall brackets that using screws fasten to the walls where you place a board. You can purchase pre-finished ones, or if your looking for a special color, can paint to match what ever room it is that your looking to put this in. The folks at these home centers can show you all the many types and styles of brackets that you could possibly want to use. Most are pretty easy to use.Helpful Reply

KMS Woodworks on Nov 03, 2012In its simplest form a plank of some kind and some brackets. http://kmswoodworks.files.wordpress.com/2012/01/dsc_2816.jpg built ins are a bit more difficult. I have a client who saw the pic above and commissioned me to built one just like it but a bit bigger...in his case 60" long and 13" wide..for that we are going with 4 shelf brackets.Helpful Reply

Bernice H on Nov 03, 2012@KMS Woodworks Did you "make" this shelf? It is so neat! Hubs would love this! Did you do "whatever" to the plank yourself? I looked a the picture, but was no text. I love the brackets.Helpful Reply

KMS Woodworks on Nov 04, 2012Yes this was made from scratch...at least the wood parts. This is "blue stain" pine which is somewhat common here in the west. With our drought conditions the pines are being hit with bark beetles and as the dead tree continues to stand the fungus attacks. The blue color is a by product of the fungus. It can lead to some very nice looking stuff. For the shelf I get my wood in a rough state from a local sawmill...I then plane it to remove the rough saw marks...then I join the boards trim and sand them. The finish is a clear satin wiping poly. The shelf pic is at our cabin where I am installing Tongue and Groove paneling, that is also being finished with the same wiping poly. you can see some of that n this blog post http://kmswoodworks.wordpress.com/2012/01/15/cabin-trip-report-slightly-delayed/Helpful Reply

KMS Woodworks on Nov 04, 2012Yes I did make that shelf. It is made with "blue stain" pine which we have quite a bit of out her in the west. The Blue color comes from a fungus infection that follows in the wake of the beetle kill. I start with rough sawn lumber from a local mill. When I get it, it is very rough. The first steps are to run it through my planner to get them smooth and uniform in thickness. I then joint them and trim and final sand. The finish is an oil based satin wiping poly. That shelf is at our cabin where I am installing tongue and groove blue stain to all of the walls and ceiling. I still have some ways to go be we are getting there. I hope to get down for thanksgiving to get some more work done. http://kmswoodworks.wordpress.com/2012/01/15/cabin-trip-report-slightly-delayed/Helpful Reply

Bernice H on Nov 04, 2012So the shelf is blue stain pine, and the walls (re your site) are also. I love the grain in them. I guess it is fair to say no grass grows under your feet. You're a busy man! And you do great work!Helpful Reply
