Painting is the one thing you can do to change up a space entirely! No need to purchase new furniture or decor, just grab a can of paint! My favorite brand is the Annie Sloan. Love that is requires no prepping or priming. Just paint and go! Simply awesome!
Here is the before picture! The look is totally drastic and different! I may end up adding a little something to the inside of my cabinet, but for now I like it dark because it makes my dishes stand out.
Add in a little greenery for that special pop of color and then maybe a twig or so of colored flowers to draw the eye!

Love it. I know there's a lot of people out there that hate when antiques are painted. But, it's yours to do with what you want. It looks great for a cottagey home.
