I would purchase some thin strips of wood, 1/4 in. thick, cut to fit the width of the step and stain them. Adhere or screw 2-3 on each step. Or the grainy type self adhesive strips can be purchased at Lowes or Home depot which would be easier, but not as attractive.

You could use carpet squares in center and still have the would look finish. They do stay on the steps fairly well. You could also work with the non skid mats that you could cut to fit the pads.

Ask at your hardware/paint store. There is a very fine gritty material you can add to poly or paint to solve this problem.

@There are also strips of non slip material, possibly rubber, that are made to go on stair treads for added traction. There are about an inch wide and you would put two lengths on each tread.

I would do a carpet strip on the inside tops of the step! It gives you the non slip without covering the stair completly!
