The house is built in the 50's previous owners put in granite square tile without grouting and it is uneven. It is about 9 feet long and 25 inches in width. The edging is with a wood trim awful. I am thinking there must be some way I can do this project myself and without breaking the bank. I thought of butcher block but don't have the tools. What else can I do?? I would welcome all ideas, thanks! Also I hate granite never like it. I entertain the idea of Laminate or Formica, can this be placed over the granite? Oh, the sink is in the middle and if I can do something myself then the sink can stay.

@Michelle !! Sorry to say...that trim is actually in our bathroom to match our accent tiles in the shower!! I am not a fan of granite either...unless it is a pure white with tons of sparkles in it!! Butcher block, eh not a fan at all!! I guess going to the Home Depot or whatever you and looking for already cut pieces [lengths] or 'slabs' that contractors didn't use. That trim throws me off and would just invest in a solid piece....good luck sweetie!! Sorry!!

No to laminate over granite-you would never get a good bond. Butcher block is sold at Lumber Liquidators and is basically by the foot and reasonable. Or you could do concrete counters over top. Search Pinterest. It is a thin coat formed on top and over the sides. Remove the wood molding first. Good luck in whatever you choose.

I agree with searching Pinterest for concrete counter tops....also, Home Depot sells prefab laminate countertops for a very reasonable amount. Good luck!

I bet those tiles would pop off pretty easily with a hammer and a cats paw or pry tool. Then you could put whatever you wanted on. Ikea sells some pretty nice counter tops for a good price. You can look on line. You don't need to make angled cuts at the corners with butcher block. Maybe you could borrow a jig saw to cut out the sink. You can get a cheap one for about 30 at a big box store. Home depots laminate is pre angled at the corners but you will still need to jig the sink out (it's easy.)

@Suzyetty thanks that is a thought and I agree I think the tiles would have no problem coming off

Get rid of the granite. Then start from scratch with your new top. Leaving the granite with anything over it opens your kitchen to MOLD, as the granite is porous. If not sealed once or twice a year you will have more problems than you can think of. The kitchen is used on a daily basics so please try to use either Solid Surface or Quartz. No sealing required easy to clean up, and keeps your kitchen healthy.
