I want to do some under cabinet lighting hardwired in with a dedicated dimmer switch - what's my best choice - when I

Micci S on Sep 25, 2011Halogen is still a good bet - another choice might be rope lights - I have both. The light (color?) looks the same to me, but you probably also want to consider price, and ease of install and replacement. The halo gets pretty hot, and I have to be careful that nothing comes in contact (decor, etc). If budget is a factor I've seen the ropes for a tenth of the price at the "big box" vs. lighting stores (especially around Christmas time) Hope that helps, MHelpful Reply

3po3 on Sep 27, 2011You can also find EnergyStar-rated fluorescent fixtures for undercabinet lighting. They use a lot less energy, and don't get as dangerously hot as the halogen lights.Helpful Reply

Hudson Designs on Sep 28, 2011Jame's has a good low cost lighting idea. And for an option up grade to LED. It's not much more in price and is Energy star approved lighting and very safe.Helpful Reply

Patrick M on Oct 03, 2011Thanks everyone. Appreciate your help. I think I'll look at the rope and LED. The heat from the halogen makes me less inclined towards it.Helpful Reply

ElectraMedics Electrical Services on Oct 03, 2011LED is a really nice way to go these days. I think rope light often looks more like an after thought than a planned lighting upgrade. Good luck!Helpful Reply

Culpepper Carpets and Interiors, Inc. on Oct 03, 2011I agree, LED is the way to go. More expensive up front, but they last for years & burn cool. The halogen get so hot they can heat the dishes & raise the temperature of the room in summer, argh!Helpful Reply

Patrick M on Oct 04, 2011My only issue is thet the LED don't dim. I'd prefer not to use halogen for the heat issue. We're getting close. Have to finish the bathroom first. Just getting ideas together for when we're ready to start the project.Helpful Reply
