JL Spring & Associates on Sep 25, 2011OH MY Goodness, That space Screams for a Night Blooming Cerrus plant. I saw one in that exact type of setting and it was the most breathtaking plant I have ever seen. Just opened it's wings and had at least 2 blooms in one night. here's a few links to the plants and each will get it's own "personality" in the way it grqws and blooms...can mature in a little over a year enough to get your first blooms...let me know if you do this, I'd tune in to watch for sure! est 2 U! Micci S on Sep 25, 2011Have you tried a taller lamp over on the left? I definitely see your problem, would a little bit larger table fit? Taller like a sofa table? Good luck, can't wait to see other ideas.Helpful Reply

Galena G on Sep 25, 2011Have you seen this? It might be very interesting in that space. and leave some options for themed decor pictures in frames (small collectables). I have no idea how tall this is so you might look at specs. http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/Croc-7-drawer-Wood-Armoire/5944814/product.htmlHelpful Reply

Terry Haas on Sep 25, 2011Sharon I know you may think I am nuts but...does it need anything/ The space was put there to highlight the curve of the staircase, height of ceiling etc. Maybe this is a case of less is more.Helpful Reply

Micci S on Sep 25, 2011Sharon said the ceiling is 22' (not in pic), so it very well may look "dwarfed" in person - and Sharon, what about paint? Maybe if the colors were closer, the size wouldn't stand out so much? Just throwing out ideas........... (Was there a model home?) (......and....,you're not nuts Teri!)Helpful Reply

Shane Tallant on Sep 25, 2011Sharon- I wouldn't worry about the scale of the pieces you put there because of the space's unique dimensions. Typically, a person's eyes will stop at the railings/steps. That console looks great, but you could also consider a coat rack (if appropriate). It's taller and slimmer. GOOD LUCK!Helpful Reply

WallsTreat Studio/ Kass Wilson on Sep 26, 2011I agree with Shane about something tall and SLIM. His coat tree idea also addresses the fact that the wall and staircase are curved.Helpful Reply

HandyANDY - Handyman & All Repairs, LLC on Sep 27, 2011Tough space....what about a custom bench for some storage and swapping from street shoes to slippers....and turn the opposite wall into a family display....rotating pictures....framed school things....if you had kids..something like that would put a smile on your face in the morning...and remind you why you do it all when you got back home. Most visitors won't even notice the space...and you may not to draw attention to it other than using it for something that makes sense to you and yours.Helpful Reply

Shane Tallant on Sep 27, 2011I love the idea of a custom bench that includes storage. It would be a great place to relax while waiting for someone to 'get ready' or for someone to pick you up. Also, framed art hung in a random arrangement would confuse the eye and draw attention away from the unique shape and height. GOOD LUCK!Helpful Reply

Nichter's Home Services Corp on Sep 27, 2011I renovated a place ten or twelve years ago with that exact situation. Their interior designer placed a smaller table ( can't recall if round or square) with a tallish floor lamp and a seat. It has a telephone on the table I thinkHelpful Reply

Bob and RodMan S on Sep 27, 2011A Japanese tansu step chest would workif the space were not curved. Would the balance of the home decor admit a mural or a "tromp l'oeil" painting that might pick up on the floral display in the alcove photo?Helpful Reply

Beverly T on Sep 27, 2011I think something that has the same curve shape as the stairwell would look nice there. Another idea would be to put a mural or tapestry. I would place something on the left side that would be higher and then something lower to the right. Just think of things that you like. A floral tree like the floral arrangement you showed on the right would work with something lower on the right like a thin console that is narrower than the one you have there now. http://www.a-furniture.com/HomeAccessories/Accessories/Pedestals/MahoganyTiffanyPedestalWithLight.html Another idea Use 2. One could be higher than the other. http://themidwoodblog.com/?tag=craigslist another tiffany pedestal or something similar http://www.google.com/imgres?q=tiffany+pedestal+with+flowers&hl=en&rlz=1C1CHFX_enUS445US445&biw=1024&bih=499&tbm=isch&tbnid=p6_vHeBcnyU2yM:&imgrefurl=http://sites.google.com/site/advancebridge/products&docid=inHqeiMbm_rZ6M&w=750&h=1050&ei=4H-CTs3vGc-htwfx9uT2AQ&zoom=1 http://zhkis.com/lighted-stained-glass-pedestal-table.aspx http://www.google.com/imgres?q=tiffany+pedestal+with+flowers&hl=en&rlz=1C1CHFX_enUS445US445&biw=1024&bih=499&tbm=isch&tbnid=2nE_hJVV-ZyIPM:&imgrefurl=http://www.select2gether.com/tiffany-style-marble-top-lit-pedestal-detail-10820165&docid=IdCDYwP3nNc8kM&w=400&h=400&ei=4H-CTs3vGc-htwfx9uT2AQ&zoom=1Helpful Reply

Betty W on Sep 28, 2011I agree with Terry. I don't think that you need anything there. You have a table that leads into the living room it looks like. I feel that if you put another one there in the foyer it is to much and you take away from the beautiful entry way. Yes sometimes , less is beautiful. Betty WhatleyHelpful Reply

Sharon N on Sep 28, 2011Betty - that's' a great point about the tables. What do you think of the picture of the planter that I attached in previous blog? I am leaning to nothing or nothing with paint treatment or maybe this planter. Would love to hear your thoughts.Helpful Reply

HandyANDY - Handyman & All Repairs, LLC on Oct 09, 2011I'd be leaning to the "less is more" theory with the space....either as useful but classy storage bench which wouldn't be noticed much....or some custom paint work.....like Cass can do to make it a focal point.Helpful Reply

Galena G on Oct 12, 2011Ok, I have a new idea! One inch tile mosaic with earthy layers or a nice theme that you like! Add some shimmery glass tiles (reflection pool?)and/or a built-in fountain hanging or on the floor. You could hav some little nooks and crannies to place small made money creepers or ivy whatever you like. If it were built onto the floor you woul have room for water plants and a well placed spot light would make the perfect spot of tranquility.;0) I have a slate fountain that I love! Here a link: http://www.soothingwalls.com/ these have a nice raw feel to them that would be perfect to build your own theme around. All the best!GHelpful Reply

Rose Goodman on May 17, 2015Easy one move the table or re-stain it the same color as the stairs. It is not the area or shape but the contrasting that does make it feel uneasy going with the unmovable option would lighten it up. in this case less is more smaller item on the top for a pop of color like a vase of your favorite flowers is all..Helpful Reply

Valerie McAndrew on Aug 10, 2015Perhaps adding a reading chair and a floor lamp. Or a sculpture, a potted tree, upholstered bench. I see too much likeness in having two similar tables in one view. And it's absolutely too small. It's a beautiful staircase. Even adding a few different sized trunks in a cluster and an upright behind to showcase the stairway....please post your upgrade.Helpful Reply
