It's time to repaint the deck...UGH...

It's only been painted once (professionally sprayed) with Sherwin Williams oil base stain 3 years ago. I applied a good coat of Wet and Forget in the late spring to get rid of the green moss/mold. It seems to have of worked but I'm hoping to only do a light pressure wash before re-painting with the same product. AND only paint the deck floor at this time as it needs it more than the uprights. Can I get anyone's blessing on this plan??? Please, please? And, I'll be doing the job this time...with a brush! Sorry professionals... Economics you know...

You seem to be on the right track...3 years is about average for a horizontal surface. power washing is a good way to free up loose material you just need to use caution as it can damage the wood if you get in too close or use a narrow setting I like to use the 15 degree setting and about 10-12 " of distance. Of course you will need a number of hot rain free days for this to fully dry out before you re-apply. I'm not a huge fan of "surface" stains as I prefer to use penetrating oil based stains...the use of a penetrating stain eliminates the removal of the old finish before a re-coat is applied. I have been using the Penofin products on my Ipe for about 15 years....it still looks brand new.

You will do a better job with a brush than the pros did with spraying. As KMS stated, it's better to use a semi-transparent or penetrating product, as it will not peel. Best, Charles

Thanks for the responces...seems all we have here in ATL these days are "rain free". Now, if I can just get the pressure washer started...look out!!!

Don't forget to let the deck dry well between power-washing and staining for the best possible results...

Are you using regular wood paint or epoxy paint?

You can get Deck, Fence, Wood Stain from Home depot is good product to paint deck etc. Make sure you used pressure wash to clean before repaint the deck.
  • Hi TD - if your plan is to use the exact same oil-based stain...you should be good to go! I almost always use brush and rollers on decks...just old school and you get a better, longer lasting job than spraying....Good weather for it!

I will be using Sherwin Williams "Deckscapes" oil base stain as before. And,thanks for the roller idea...that will save some time!

I used a wide painting pad when staining my deck and found it applied better and faster than a brush. I switched from SW Deskscapes to Home Depot deck stain this time after a thorough cleaning.

My husband wants to re-stain our deck. The builder really didn't do a good job. All during the summer it showed all the dirt and grime. What's the best solution for that? Is there a specific kind of stain to use or product to keep it looking fresh?

You need to know what is on the deck now to best proceed. Any idea? If not, a picture may help to ID. Best, Charles
  • If you can't tell, you can knock out a spindle or balluster (the small vertical piece in the railings) and take it into Sherwin Williams and they'll be able to tell you what you have.
