Painting smooth surface ceramic bathroom floor tiles

I have white smooth surface tiles in my bathroom, and I hate them! They are smooth surface 8x8 aprox. Since the bathroom is high traffic, I was wondering if there is a technique to paint the floor giving them a slight texture almost like sponging some different colors on and to seal them. Has any one got any tips on this?

You have to be really careful with paint in a floor. It's a tough surface to keep looking nice. My husband and I are in the process of covering up some awful ceramic tile using self adhesive place and press tile squares. The were very inexpensive (about $10 for 25) and they will stick nicely to the existing tiles. If you decide to paint see a pro at one of the larger paint outlets for their opinion. Good luck!

I would suggest checking with your local 'paint stores'.....there are specialty paints made for tiles and different brands may have different procedures to apply their paint. Doing an online search could be an option and may also supply some different options. The newer paints are a lot better than the ones I used 15+ yrs ago...

Please tell me if you get a qualified, good answer? I hate my ugly color, sloppily painted grout, one inch sqaure tiles in my bathroom and the other one is just that someone used this grout PAINT on both bathroom floors (looks like a child finger painted them or close). I have tried ammonia to strip the paint on the grout (think squiggley lines, very messy)...... I have tried degreaser, recently I tried Citristrip (nothing) & now I am trying LimeAway.. some slight progress. But I think it could be that I have put so many solvents on the blasted floor that it just looks cleaner......... seriously I am about to go screaming crazy.

Try some Liquid Plumber. It's worth a try. Let it set for a while before Removing. Be sure to wear rubber gloves.

While Arlene is correct, there are tile paints, they are not usually good for floor application. The just do not seal and wear well. By trade, I was an interior designer and never had any luck with wearing well Bottom line - I would say cover it up as suggested by Diane. Hope this helps.

Hi Ladies, thank you all for your feedback...I'm thinking that Diane has the best answer for what I want to do...I was hoping to not do that, as I'm in a rental and will have to pull them up before leaving...but its either that, or live with white tiles that show all the dust, dirt, and hair on them... :-)

@Bonnie Davis I did not want to say the same as Diane. I have called RustOleum and they told me the same thing. NONE of their tile paint otr any other is recommended for a floor!!! Drat it all......also if you are a renter......... I would not put those peel n stick down either..... oh my, they are not easy to remove!

Oh yes, the LimeAway I purchased at the Dollar Tree made the most difference. I still have the awful squiggly lines of grout, but they are super white now and look a lot better. One tip, go to HD and purchase the grout sealer BEFORE you use the LimeAway, so it does not get dirty again before you get it sealed.
