The time it takes to learn about new and better ways of doing things has been significantly lessened since participating in this forum. Our company is always looking for ways to decrease maintenance costs or add value to customers property, and Hometalk is helping to speed this process up because of the exposure to many like-minded peers.
We have also been fortunate enough to be used in a number of projects originating at Hometalk!
Thanks KMS for the Penofin recommendation and thanks John in Macon from Hearthstone, Inc. for the tip on the carpenter bee repellant additive.
Best, Charles

  • Why do you think the 2-coats of Duration is a deterrent? This is the first year that I am seeing the borers go into freshly painted wood. I hand brush so I'd be smelling it with my crew! As long as we don't get customer complaints on it...no problem. I'm going to try it and see. So you have used it somewhere already? I'm told that 2-coats of Duration on previously painted cedar is a bad idea. I have a couple of cedar houses we will be redoing in marietta and both have cedar trim that was painted instead of stained. The heavy Duration film may cause the cedar to rot from within..under the multiple layers of paint....at least that's what I was told. I may step down to SuperPaint to avoid that problem.

If a house needs painting, it needs two coats. Most homes don't have enough paint on them to protect from the elements. I have never heard two coats is bad, cedar or not. S-W sould tell you if it were true. If water gets behind any paint, it's bad. Just make sure it is caulked tight; no cracks, no pores, no water, no rot. With two coats, it is just too rubbery for the bees to chew through easily, so they go next door. The smell won't bother the homeowner; they will probably like it! I have used it only on stained beams on this last job. Happy brushing, Charles
