Anybody know about sunflowers?

My sis bought these beautiful fresh cut sunflowers from a florist to take to the mausileum for Father's Day, they are dying and I wondered if there was any way of drying these for the seeds to plant? I thought of drying in the sun, but we have had a horribly soggy June here in western Pa.

Absolutely!not in direct sun but hung upside down in the shade. When they are ready, they will pop off with your fingers. Then, let them dry a few more days on paper towels. If you want to plant them next year, wrap them in a paper towel, put them in a lidded jar and label them with the date and type of sunflower( if you know),for next year...

I scrape the little doodads (not sure what they are called) off that cover the seeds and throw the head into a paper box lid to dry. In a few months, I remove the seeds and leave them lay in the box until they are ready to be planted. Works like a charm each and every time.

@Nancy J Spring, April-May. The birds love the seeds. When you grow them as I do, the birds eat their fare share and drop plenty on the ground. Most of those will grow in the spring when the soil warms up without you doing a thing. Enjoy the flowers. They're beautiful and there are plenty of different varieties available in Walmart, Home Depot and in the grocery store.

I planted mine in the beginning of May. Harvested them in late September.

Hang the flower in your garage and let it dry. Then bag the seeds for next spring. I start a few in pots in March or April to get a head start on spring and now have some that are 7' tall.

once they are dried upsidedown, keep them in the crisper in a sealed plastic bag. most seeds need a cold spell to germinate. some can be planted in the fall and they are first to come up. not sure about the sunflowers.
