Plumbing question

We are in the process of disposing of the contents of my father-in-law's house. We live 2+ hours away and are doing this approximately every other weekend when all/most of the siblings can get together. In our absence, one of the toilet flappers failed leaving us with a $500 water bill. My question is: is it OK to turn off the main water valve for 2+ weeks at a time? If so, what about winter time? I don't see us in a position to sell the house before next spring.

Turning off the main isn't going to hurt anything. You will have to leave the heat on in the winter so you don't break any pipes. You could just shut that toilets valve off instead of the main.

@Tonia We have shut off that toilet until we can replace the flapper. We want to ensure we don't get another $500 water bill or incur water damage because something failed when no one is there. The water heater comes to mind.

The best solution is turn off the water at the main. I would also turn off the water heater. There is no reason to keep paying for hot water when no one is there. Heat and air can be turned as low as it will go on the thermostat.

Turning the water off is no problem but YOU MUST TURN OFF THE HOT WATER HEATER(when water is off the hot water will continue to try and heat the empty tank causing the elements to burn out) also in the winter pipes, toilets etc. have to be drained and RV antifreeze added to specific areas so any water that is not drained will not freeze and burst the pipes.
