I am removing wallpaper and a plastic/rubber boarder from my kitchen.

The wallpaper remove spray and scrapper works wonderfully on the wallpaper. But the black rubber backing from the plastic boarder is not coming off. Need ideas on how to remove it
You can see the black rubber from behind the border/trim (that was also painted)

I would try Googone adhesive remover in an inconspicuous spot.
  • Care should be taken using a adhesive remover on wall paper surface. Many are vinyl coated and the adhesive removal may melt the surface of the paper, so be sure as Karen said, try on a small inconspicuous spot before doing the rest of the wall.

I'm a little fuzzy on picturing this "plastic border" thingy...is it like a chair rail molding? If so is the plastic coming off but leaving a "double sided tape" type of residue? I have had some luck with a similar "sticky" problem using a very thin but quite sharp putty knife....or a chisel. with that you basically shave the offending strip off of the wall. I you gouge a few spots by accident a little joint compound can fill in your mistakes....this may be needed anyway as part of a basic wallpaper removal anyway.

Hi Sara I would use Klean strip adhesive remover its sold at the Home Depot(Check your local store for availabilty). The adhesive remover is a thick paste and it works in 30 minutes it should be easy to come off then.

It looks too thick to use remover. It looks to be either a thick backing or mastic. If so, it could be scraped of with a 5-in-1 tool. For an instant, I thought the pic was upside down and I was seeing a cove base. You'll do some gouging; put on your dust mask. Best, CPeace
  • This almost looks like base molding that was installed upside down?
  • Most adhesives are thermoplastic - meaning that heat will loosen them.A heat gun of hair dryer while scraping.

    Try steaming it.

Yep...another first in my book. That Plastic "border" as you call it appears to be "cove base" and woodbridge also noticed. These are normally installed with a mastic or adhesive ( thing heavy duty glue..that can stick to rubber) a sharp 5 in 1 or chisel may be your best bet. nich's idea of heat is worth a try...there use a 4" drywall knife as your weapon of choice. regardless of what is used you will most likely need to do some skimming when this is all over.

Now that is just wierd! What were they thinking?
  • When you have been in business for as long as many of us have, this is nothing to what we have seen on other homes. This is what makes our jobs as contractors fun!
  • I've seen crown up side down so nothing surprising about cove base down side up

lol, as rare as this may be, we had the same when removing our wall paper. We steamed it and used a chisel and it just slid right off. Easy peasy!

Heat a little white vinegar and put in a spray bottle with water.Just spray on and let it sit for a few minutes - melts it like ice cream. Worked where NOTHING else did!

I used Citrastrip ( It's earth friendly) to remove a black plastic strip, it also worked removing ceramic tile adhesive from the bathroom walls. I brushed it under the upper edge of the plastic border then let it sit for a few minutes. Bonus with the ceramic tile removal, no dust.

Not sure why anyone would put floor edging around the ceiling of a room, but YES that adhesive is a real bugger to remove. Takes lots of patience, a good scrapper and some adhesive remover. Good luck!

I have used acetone based fingernail polish remover to loosen all kinds of adhesives. When I scrapped vinyl tile off of floors the guy at our local home improvement store told me to try it. Super cheap and it worked very well.

Try heating it with a blow dryer, I would think the heat would soften the glue. But this is only a guess.........

A word of caution..whatever you use to try to remove the old wallpaper and adhesive, make sure there is plenty of ventilation..open all windows when doing this..most stuff like this can be very dangerous if used without ventilation. I speak from experience using Kilz many years ago in the summertime when it was scorching hot, in upper 90's and we didn't want to open windows and doors..We almost made a trip to ER that night via 911..

Why don't you find a curved wood moulding and install it over existing moulding and the top of the new wallpaper?

When I took up stick down tiles in my kitchen, lots of the black sticky backing was left. Tried and adhesive remover - pricey. Discovered paint thinner did a better job.
