Wild Blackberries...

Are horrible here! Does anyone have a natural remedy for killing them down to the roots so they don't keep coming back? We have a beautiful slope in the back of our yard and I would love to landscape it... If the blackberries didn't keep coming back.

Blackberry brambles are one of gardening's biggest challenges, Debra. You can easily shred your hands trying to pull them out, even with gloves, and they will re-sprout from any bit of root left. That is why, for me, this is one of those situations where I would turn to an herbicide containing glyphosate. You can paint the leaves with it, wait a couple of weeks, then cut the vines as close to the ground as possible and paint the cut stems again. If you do not kill the roots you are not going to rid yourself of the problem. If you will not consider that, there is a product certified for organic production called "Blackberry & Brush Block" that is made by Greenergy Inc. The main ingredient is citric acid. I haven't used it so can't vouch at all for its effectiveness. If you try it and it works, please let us know.

I did not know blackberry brambles were such a problem. They grew wild where I grew up but I have never encountered them in suburbia.

The best luck I've had with removing them - even though it's a pain - is digging them up by the roots. Then I toss them on the pile we let build all year for our annual winter bonfire. Where we live we are surrounded by forest, and often those darn brambles scrape us up as we mow around the edges of the yard. Each spring I focus on a different section, cut them back with loppers, then dig up the roots.

I have been dealing with these nasty things too... they grew right where I decided that my vegetable garden was going to go. :(

I'm just about ready to re-try the chemical herbicides..... I will check into the Greenergy products though! Thank you!

Debra--I agree with Douglas Hunt. Herbicides are the answer, although opinions vary on when to apply. I saw something recently that said fall is the best time to spray. Unless you have a goat, spraying is really the answer in my opinion. Good luck to you!
