I live in a tiny home with an even tinier bathroom and I am confined to a wheelchair and it will only fit about 1.5

feet into the bathroom. I have a bench that fits lengthwise in the tub. I want to gut the bathroom taking out the tub and making a roll-in shower. As it is right now, I have to transfer from my chair onto the bench and it is very scary!! I have fallen in the past. If I could gut the bathroom, I could take part of the second bedroom to make the new bathroom big enough to roll into and around. I would like to get an ADA toilet and sink and then in the new shower, have strategically placed bars and a bench so that the days I felt like I could get out of my chair, I'd have a place to sit. Has anyone had their bathroom remodeled that really liked their contractor? I'm also needing my kitchen re-done and have some other projects, too. PLEASE give me a shout-out if you liked your contractor and the crew that did the work. Were they professional? And did they really listen to what you said and wanted? Would really appreciate your input. Thank you, Caroline Ray

Your ...lucky your in the Atlanta area...there are many great contractors available...You can use some of the search tools here on site...You can also read reviews on contractors .
  • Caroline, be sure to check out my website BewareOfContractor.com to get tips on picking a contractor and how to do your work up front. Getting a referral is good, but it it NOT the only step. And in your case, the last thing you want is a bad project that could cause you more harm. There are some great contractors here and with NARIAtlanta that have specific certifications regarding accessibility issues that are going to be important so you definitely want to check out those certifications as well.
  • You probably want to ask AK Complete Home Renovations. They are on Hometalk and do some fabulous work from what I've seen. HandyANDY used to do some baths and we've done several roll in showers & wheelchair accessability projects in the past. We limit ourselves now strictly to repairs & maintenance....which keeps us plenty busy. Just be careful with your bid project as there are a ton of underfunded contractors in our market...many who will get a deposit, cherry pick the profitable parts and leave you hanging. Those active in a forum like this aren't likely to perform that way!

  • Hi Caroline, Also, you may want to consider getting a floor plan drawn for the changes you want to make, to make sure everyone is on the same page. It's good to get that before the bids so then you can get comparable bids.

Thanks for the answers, but I'm still hoping for more ideas.Just out of curiousity, does anyone know how to get a home remodeling grant? I am an above knee amputee and really need my home gutted, but since I am on disability, I have no way of paying for any of this. PLEASE if anyone knows someone or some way, let me know. I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you, Caroline Ray
