How do you drill a hole in a terracotta pot?

I see projects that require you to drill holes in terracotta pots. Is there a special technique to do this? What kind of drill bit is needed?

tape the site where you want the hole withe masking tape or painters tape. Mark the tape to be sure you are in the right spot. I use a diamond drill bit. Hope this helps.

@Nikki Stanford Some people talk about soaking the pot first. Do you do that? Thank you for your reply. This really helps.

I agree with Nikki Stanford. I have never heard of soaking it in water first.

@JoAnn I may try both methods on some scrap pieces to see if one method is better than another.

Why do some of them not have holes? I've always wondered that...it doesn't make sense to me lol

@Sherah Marshall Taylor I do have pots without holes, but I am planning a craft project where terracotta pots are attached together.

I've read that for pottery, porcelain and other clay items you should use a cement drill bit. Use water to keep it cool as you are drilling.
