I have a severely overgrown, weedy, home property with trees that are dying, dead stumps, in other words...a mess. I have no idea where to start. Does anyone have a simple, doable plan? I have a very limited budget, but can rally friends to help. Thanks. I live in Zone 5B.

First of all, would it be possible for you to load some photographs so that we can visualise what you are dealing with? Think of it as a blank canvas. I would start with pathways and get the formal structure out of the way, and only then think of adding plants.

@Leslie You should not be embarrassed - most of us gardeners have faced the same challenges at some stage. There is such a wonderful, supportive community on Hometalk, that you have nothing to worry about!

get a piece of paper and map it out. . once you have it on paper, it should be easier to plan what to do. garden paths, stump/trees to remove privacy fencing. other structures and then call on friends to donate certain plants from their yards.

Start with a focal point in he landscape first . Once you decide on that u can easily transform the rest of your garden

Start by removing dead, overgrown plants and trees. Definitely draw a plan, even if it's just bubbles.

I feel your pain. My husband inherited property that had been neglected for over 25 years. The house was in horrible condition, and the landscaping was no exception! I started by removing the obvious...things that just didn't belong. WEEDS! Someone had a plan at one time and it started to show. Here's an idea for some (or one) of those tree stumps; http://www.lowes.com/creative-ideas/lawn-and-garden/tree-stump-container-garden/article. Perhaps this could become a focal point.

Thanks for the idea to make a plan and start removing the obvious. I have my work cut out for me.

Once you start it wont be that bad. There are many websites for ideas. HGTV Better Homes and gardens, Fine gardening etc. Keep everyone posted. If you need further advice post another question. I love a challenge. Obviously I have an acre of property that I am constantly redoing.

Thanks Janet...much appreciated. I just found out the town will be removing my ash tree in the front yard next year, so that will change things slightly. Hoping for some cooler weather soon in order attack!
