What's the best organic fertilizer for my home vegetables?

3po3 on Apr 15, 2011Worm compost is great for adding organic matter, and has several other valuable trace minerals. Alfalfa meal is a nitrogen-heavy and good source of organic matter. Bonemeal is a good source of phosphate, and blood meal is a good source of nitrogen. I recommend using some good compost, and getting a soil test through cooperative extension to determine what minerals your garden might be missing.Helpful Reply

Barb M on Aug 08, 2011Hi Vanessa, I live in the midwest where we have heavy clay soils. I LOVE 'Mills Magic' available at 'Rosmania'. I used to use it twice a year but as my as my rose passion grew, it got so expensive for me to use (Besides many perennial beds, I have approx150+ roses), fanatic. I got the recipe from my friend and fellow gardener Karl Bapts_ aka; Rosenut who's a 'Master Gardener' in Indiana. It's actually a great all purpose fertilizer. I give it to all my friends who enjoy gardening and they love it too. This is a link to his website; http://rosenut.com/rosenutspeaks.html#rosenutmixrecipe ===============================================================Helpful Reply

Erica Glasener on Aug 08, 2011I recommend mixing in compost with your soil before you plant. This will make all the difference with your vegetables. Make sure you know where it comes from (no heavy metals for food gardens).Helpful Reply

360 Sod (Donna Dixson) on Aug 08, 2011Worm Castings are always a wonderful and magical addition to any organic planting! I would advise using caution when adding any mushroom compost and follow Erica's advice 'know where it comes from' as each mushroom farm has different ingredients for growing the mushrooms, and it may contain undesirables.Helpful Reply
