Design & Décor: Not sure what do with this awesome Dog kennel?

I was at a garage sale and this couple were done for the day and were giving this really nice wood dog kennel away for free. It is missing a few dowels in the front. I want to improve upon it It is very sturdy and of nice wood. I don't have a dog but have friends that do. I could give it for a gift to a dog owner or make it into something completely different. Any ideas or suggestions? What could I do with the door where the dowels are half gone? I appreciate your thoughts!

Reclaimed Pallet Wood Table

Don't pass by a table on the trash just because the top is in bad shape. I saw this table and the leg details are what caught my eye. I grabbed it quickly and then realized that the top ...»
was not salvageable. So I removed it and made it into a farmhouse table by painting the base black and adding pallet wood to the top.

  • My son showing the guide holes used to help cut out the bottom and door. (Bottom is already removed & gourd cleaned inside.)

  • Basic design finished. It still looked naked to my eyes.
  • I added vines to fill in the blank areas.

Gourd Toad House

This was my first gourd project. I had very limited tools, but the project didn't need all the fancy stuff. With or without the fancy stuff, the design possibilities are endless. ...»

It's not in the blog post, but weathering over the summer faded some of my burned lines. (Mineral oil does not protect against the elements.) Because of this, I did go back and re-burn the faded areas with a professional-grade burner. I then used a satin poly spray (Rustolium brand) to protect the outside. I left the inside alone to avoid fumes or smells that might repel or harm the toads.

Also, I now skip the guide holes as they create uneven lines when sawing. Instead, I use a regular craft knife (Xacto) blade inserted into the gourd, making it wide enough to fit the saw blade.

When my Sondra came into my life I knew it was destiny from the start. I tried something I have never done before, and I told her the since "I got this"; I would like to clean the next one up and make it better. She said -"No way". She Loves It!

  • I think it should be law that every home has a front porch. Alongside tall pillars and flowers, there's no more welcome sight!
  • Quirky details make the grade here. LOVE the sign!
  • Why don't they make covered bridges any longer? So beautiful! I wonder if there's an actual reason this use to be done?
  • These fences are built with no tools nor holes. They are scattered around Gettysburg and were used in the battlefields so the farmers could move them around. I ADORE this look and hope to emulate it somehow. Maybe around the garden...
  • Loving this grouping of trees in pots... who says a patio can't be lush and amazing?
  • An old train station wears cheerful, complimentary colours in Gettysburg. Note flowers aren't even missed when the building takes centre stage? It's beautiful!
