Outdoor Living: How to troubleshoot rainbird sprinkler systems?

After 5 years my system is not working correctly. Two of three zones run nonstop when turned on in the ground, even with the controller turned off and unplugged.

  • My budget solution to my screen porch floors ...white washed & distressed.
  • Here are the floors before. When I started my low budget porch makeover I had to have a super cheap way to brighten up the existing floors... 3
  • First I sanded and cleaned the floors. Then using semi-transparent wood stain from The Home Depot, I sprayed on the stain...but I wasn't thrilled. So I took a rag and wiped some of the stain back off... 2
  • Kinda looked like driftwood!
I know some of you won't like this, I understand it's a bit different. :) 3
  • But I'm happy with the way it turned out and I'm almost finished with the porch makeover! 2
  • A quick look at the table! My friends at Behr Paint suggested I use a soft turquoise called Opal Silk...turned out to be my new favorite color!
Have a great day my friends xo 2

White Washing & Distressing Porch Floor!

I'm doing a makeover on my screen porch and I'm doing it on a shoestring budget! The screen porch was built last year over a part of our existing deck and the floors were less than ...»
pretty. When pricing everything I wanted to do on the porch with almost no money, I decided to stain the floors in a semi-transparent white. When I got the stain on, I wasn't thrilled so I experimented with wiping a little of the stain off to give them a distressed look. Here's what I came up with! This isn't for everybody, some of you guys might not like it-I understand, but I'm happy and I spent only $33.00 at Home Depot for the stain!

  • using a clean glass jar, apply removable adhesive labels of your choice (i used round labels from the office supply store)
  • turn your jar upside down to prevent paint overspray + apply several light coats
  • once dry, gently remove the labels
  • add a layer of glass floral beads or sand. this protects your surface from heat damage from a long-burning candle
  • i love the playfulness of the dotted design 1

  • An old ironing board that I recently painted white makes a great out door vignette on the patio.
  • I plan to drill a small hole in the ironing board top to slip the hanger wire through so it won't blow off.
  • I used a laundry basket shaped container for the Rose Star Calibrachoa.

Pressing Garden Matters

  • Keeping with our re-use and recycle theme for the party barn - we constructed this rustic outdoor kitchen for the barn pergola patio
  • We started by making the frame from 2 x 4′s – using treated lumber for the bottom
  • We added more of the old barn roof material for siding and trimmed it out to match barn
  • We used the same recycled materials to match the barn - in all -we had less than $100 in the outdoor kitchen area minus the grill of course :)

Rustic Outdoor Summer Kitchen

(www.oldworldgardenfarms.com )When we first started to put down some initial designs on paper – one thing we didn't want was a typical brick, mortar or stone outdoor kitchen. We wanted ...»
something unique, and we wanted it to match the existing barn and reclaimed brick patio. Even more – we wanted to make it from the left over recycled barn materials we already had on hand. The only other requirement was to make sure we had enough counter space on each side to be able to easily prepare food straight from the garden to the grill.

We finally decided on a simple straight line island design. 14′ long, with a 48″ grill and burner slide-in space in the middle. Each side would then be flanked by 5 foot overhanging counters. We made the width of the counter 34″ to give extra surface room to prepare and serve foods. With limited time before a looming barn party– we opted for a simple wooden top for now to match the farm table – however- as future time allows – we really want to replace with some stained concrete countertops.

THE BUILDING PROCESS

We first built a simple 2 x 4 stud frame, leaving a 48″ space in the middle and front for the grill and burners to slide in. We used treated wood for the bottom to sit on the brick pad – and then built the rest from standard 2x lumber. Next -we encased the inside of the grill area with cement board to protect the structure from the heat of the grill. Then sided the entire structure with more of the left over corrugated roofing and trimmed it out to match the barn.

All that was left was to slide in the grill – attach the top and the outdoor kitchen project was complete!
