New ways to display collectible smalls?

Question

I have many collections of many things.  So much so that many are in boxes in storage.  Does anyone know of creative and delightful ways to display small ceramics other than the obvious?  C'mon...think guys...I would like to seem more of them without driving my family out with all the shelves.  Then...the shelves....there are more law books and my daughter has a room full of VHS movies and over 900 novels in another bedroom.  Something has to be done!  Thinking of over the door shelving all around the house and removing the wallpaper borders

Shelves still top the list, like these I built for my sweeties miniature colections. http://www.hometalk.com/diy/decorate/walls/dragonfly-shelf-with-locally-harvested-juniper-693946 We also have some small display tables, and I have a small display case for some of my antique 'guy toys'. depending on the size of the items you might be able to construct some 'shadow box' box type picture frames. The nice this about case and shadow boxes is keeping the dust off of them.

VHS? Time to have them converted to CD's and discarded or donated. While saving them sounds like a good idea, the film that they are placed on will dry out and begin to crack. Making them even more worthless.

900 novels? Donate them to local charity or go to local book store and work out deal for them to sell them for you. Save a few of your favorites. Most can be had on line now anyway.

Once that is done I like Kevin's idea of the display case frames so they do not get dusty. Hang them up like pictures on all the newly found walls.

Thanks KMS, have been considering these. Woodbridge, parting her from ALL those Disney movies is comparable to when she had her wisdom teeth removed. I have advised her about the conversion, even spoke with a tech at Best Buy about doing this. She said NO. BUT...your explanation may resonate with her. Yes, thats right...they are going to disintegrate! ( I say). I'll pass that on. Her books are the same, but maybe having her volunteer at one of the organizations that do this will inspire her to GIVE. Like the shadow-box idea and looking for a project to make these from scraps. Thanks guys!

I have some smaller figurines and such and like to use these wall mounted (doll) display cases. While I don't currently find them on their websites, I've seen them for sale at Aaron Brothers and Michael's (they often show up in their ads, too). This site to which I've linked also sells multi-shelf wall curio cabinets which are another option. http://www.displays2go.com/Product.aspx?ID=15950 I'm sure someone who's handy with woodworking could easily build similar display cases/curios for next to nothing.

If you are displaying miniature items, look for some printer trays. If you are handy, you can then construct doors using hinges, molding and some brads to hold in glass. These are very thin, taking up no more distance from the wall than a picture frame and can fit almost anywhere.

Over the door shelving is a great idea for books! What kind of small figurines do you have? I've seen someone who had a collection of small birds, and he glued small loops of ribbon to them and displayed them by hanging them from a branch.
