How do I get trees out of my ground cover?

I have a good sized bed of myrtle ground cover and there are oak and maple saplings growing in it. How do I get rid of them without digging up the whole bed? Is there any way to keep them from starting there in the first place? Help!!!

Douglas Hunt on May 17, 2013As far as I know, Dotty, the only good strategy is to get them while they're young. Because these little sprouts can have pretty tenacious roots, I've found the best approach is to go around with a pair of pliers, grab them near the ground and pull. You'd be surprised at how many you can get rid of in short order.Helpful Reply

Dotty Albright on May 17, 2013Thanks, I will try this. I pulled some tonight and they came out, acorn and all. Like you said, they were just small ones.Helpful Reply
