neighbors dog/fence issue

Question

I have a fence between me and the neighbor, I garden, but cant because of their dog trying to break through the fence. Gotten no where with neighbors or landlord. Any good ideas to increase the separation? Bushes, more fencing, anything so I can have my backyard back?

You did not say if the fence was chain link or plank.

Are you afraid of dogs or is the dog getting through the fence and ruining your efforts?

If it is plank and the dog is still bothering you then I would suggest a boundary next to the fence of roses or manzanita bushes with gravel ground covering and a lawn edging.  After the first time of getting a snout full of thorn pricks the dog may stop.  Then again you might spark more aggression too.

If you have a chain link fence then I would suggest Italian cypress or juniper because it will grow tall acting as both a sound and visual barrier.  If the dog is getting through the fence then I would plant roses or manzanita bushes in front of them for a layered effect.  Webbing for chain link fencing is also available but does nothing but provide a visual block.

The last suggestion I have is go to your local nursery and get some wolf urine to spray on the border between you and your neighbor.  Keep in mind that dogs ability to detect scent is 40,000 times greater than a human so not much will be needed.  Spraying it directly at the dog IS abusive and will give your neighbor legal grounds to involve the local constabulary.  Most states do have laws and penalties for animal abuse. If the dog is not breaking through the fence, what about putting a bamboo fence on your side to block the view, and would be an interesting backdrop for your garden.

Thank you for the ideas!! Sorry was on the road away from technology. For clarification my fence is a regular board/post fence. But I have chicken wire backing my side just for extra protection because my old dog would jump back at the fence at the dogs and that just added a layer. So climbing anything would work great, especially if it was a little on the pokey side... hmmm... berries!!! I also like the bamboo idea, anything to just block it out. Your ideas are all brilliant! Especially with my lack of info provided!

Cherish C, I understand your problem.  I have the same problem taking my dogs to my rental property.  Dogs were so happy walking around and sniffing.  Then two little dogs on the otherside of the fence barked/yipped and put their noses through the wood & my 89 and 103 lb dogs decided to dig under the fence to stop that.  Of course my dogs were pullled away and taken home.   I am taking notes from this site.  Thank you for posting.

So I tried looking for the bamboo fencing, thinking of the cheap roll out stuff that I could just use the staple gun or something to attach to the fence... all I am able to find so far is big thick bamboo fencing and its $50 for a 5ft section... not exactly the quick and cheap solution... anyone have any ideas where to find the smaller cheaper stuff??

Inmy view, you should consider chain link fence. Chain link fences are the topchoice for securing backyards, schools, swimming pools, playgrounds,wildlife-barriers, and kennels and ideal choicefor both residential and commercial application.Nice job.

Oh wow, I forgot to mark this as answered. I am in luck those neighbors have moved, the new neighbors and dogs are much more friendly. And I am moving soon. So, yup let me just get rid of this!

Your landlord has a duty to you. If you get nowhere then go to your local council. Your neighbour cannot just let her dog run amok like that. You need to be safe in your own home. . Try a water pistol!!! But tell your neighbour 1st!.
