What color should I paint my front door?

For a 1940's Tudor painted light gray with creamy yellow trim, and black framed windows. The front wooden arched door is painted pink ( came with the house!). There is an aluminum door over the front door made for the house ( do not like this !) I was thinking of painting the aluminum door black, but what do I paint my wooden door? Need to leave the ugly aluminum door on as to protect the wooden door. Help!!!

I think black is to stark. Personally I would go with a grey a on both doors to blend with the house.

Hi Susan, If the door is not painted and still is natural wood I would consider sanding it down and using marine grade polyurethane on it. In most cases the original doors for older homes were made from beautiful wood. Paint the storm door black and if you don't like it you can always redo it in the creamy color. A suggestion for the future is to add pictures so that we can get an idea of the layout and a close approximation of color. It is very hard to try and help when there is no reference.

Susan, You can strip the door if it is wood. I have done it to my door and it is easy. You just have to set aside a good couple of days to do it because the door does have to come off the hinges. You can set up in your garage with a couple of sawhorses or improvise. Make sure you cover the floor with plastic and or newspaper. The car can stay outside for the duration. You can strip one side or both depending on if you want the natural look of the door inside. You may think this is a lot of work but once you see the end result you will be happy. In the end it is your choice. :)

Leslie says older homes have beautiful doors--she's so right! If yours is the original, would you consider stripping it? My 100 yr. old oak door is gorgeous--I stripped it and varnished it--gorgeous.

I would do yellow. We recently painted our grey house with a yellow door and get tons of compliments.
