Tea roses

we have 3 tea rose bushes next to each other. a red with a white on each side. The red is fine but a couple of times over the summer the whites loose all their leaves for a couple of weeks then they come back and start flowering and look hardy. The soil is clay. I fertilize every 2-3 months. The sun shines on them for a out 60 % of the day. They get plenty of water.

Do the leaves get dark spots on them before they fall off? If so, it's possible they have a problem with "black spot". It's worse on some varieties than others, so that might account for why the leaves fall off the white rose plants, but not the red. Make sure you aren't getting water on the leaves when you water the plants and, if the problem is "black spot", you might be happier if you would treat the rose for that. There are a number of commercial products available at any store with rose care supplies.

no black spots..the 3 plants are near a dryer vent. But it's only the white ones, not the red one.
