I have painted several pieces of laminate furniture with good results. I do not sand. Everybody says you HAVE to sand but believe me, it isn't necessary. Instead, I wipe the piece down with a liquid sandpaper/deglossing product first. Then I apply a couple thin coats of a good bonding primer (I like Zinsser brand). Then I just use several thin coats of a good quality latex paint until I get the coverage I desire. Thin coats of the bonding primer and paint, and adequate drying time between coats is one of the secrets of getting the paint to adhere well. Latex paint also takes a while to really harden so depending on the weather, that could be a couple weeks. That doesn't mean you can't use the piece of furniture while you are waiting for it to cure but just be careful with it until you are sure it has cured well.

Yes, it is GREAT stuff! Saves so much time...and energy. :) You should have no trouble finding it in any home improvement/hardware store -- usually on the aisle where they sell turpentine, paint strippers etc. Any brand should work but I personally prefer KleenStrip deglosser. I think Home Depot carries it.
