How can I make shade for my balcony?

In the summer I get the hot afternoon sun . I would like to create shade for when my cats go on the balcony and for the few plants I put out.

Hey Mary, why don't you try a retractable pergola? Or a retractable fabric awning? If you want a quick solution, try a patio umbrella.
I made Roman shades for my patio out of drop cloth, Roman shade tape, eye screws and pvc pipe. That way we only need to put them down when the sun is glaring onto the patio. Curtains would work too, something to tie back when you want the sun, let down when you don't. Or maybe a folding screen of some type would be easier.
How about a shade sail.
