Use white on the trim, baseboards, and doors. almost any pastel will work. Cream is restful. Very pale yellow. Pastel mauve.pastel blue.
Spa colors are generally blue and aqua tones. Paired with white trim, the combination should be very soothing.
have you tried literally one shade of your favorite color up from white? ...i.e. a extremely pale shade of your favorite color? Since the room tends to be dark, it might make even the palest of colors look dark.
What lighting to you have in the room? lamps with bright bulbs? Updating your lighting will often do wonders!
what do you have on the windows ?---heavy drapes will make it feel darker whereas, minimalist type of shades in pale colors will make it feel crisp.
Is your furniture dark and heavy? That also contributes to a dark feeling room. I have this, but the furniture is high end, so I make sure everything else in the room is light and bright and airy feel.
I guess what I am suggesting is to look at your room in totality and not just the paint color. Everything contributes to the look and feel and paint color is only one piece.
For a really restful room, pick a lighter shade of a color you like and stick with the same color scheme throughout the room since restfulness can be achieved by simplicity. Download photos of spas and you will see that they are decorated sparsely but elegantly - use these for inspiration.
I used Glidden Universal Gray. It's a light gray with slight blue undertones.
We just redid our master bedroom and also used a pearl blue gray (Behr's from Home Depot) paint. We love the fact that in some light it looks like a soft blue, and at other times of the day, it looks gray. I used lime green accents (a glass lamp, pillows, a vase, wall prints and flowers) to add some pizazz. But that's the nice part about that neutral shade; you can use any favorite color as an accent color.
