When I used to have them, I always kept a bottle of food grade mineral oil, and wiped it on till it absorbed. Any dark spots I would bleach out with 10% solution of bleach to water in a spray bottle.

on here had been a post how to build one yourself I cant locate it
try this site. Like the article states, many use beeswax was well, but beeswax is great for a woodworker who is making them, its a great final sealant. cleaning solution, then Tung oil is best for cleaning & restoring.
